An unknown error occurred (6). A solution, anyone?

Error 6! I won't forget! Here's my problem:
I had no problem paying and downloading the software, iTunes had my iPod Touch backed up without any problem either. But it just wouldn't install the freaking software. I kept getting this error message "An unknown error occurred (6)". I lost count how many times I tried this and i am very frustrated.
This is what I found on the support page regarding what to do with an error 6 and many other errors (2, 6, 9, -18, -48, -50, 1002, 1011, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1608, 1609, 1611, 2003, 2004, -9808).

Anyone encountering the same problem, pls check out the support article and try going through the steps Apple suggested there, see if it will fix the problem cause I went through every single one of them (except using a windows machine) and none of them worked. Sigh~! I am back to 1.1.4 now and Apple will be hearing from me.
10 bucks short and my Saturday gone, I am not happy. (and don't get me started on the $20 I paid in January!!! Fxxx!)

HI

I bought a Iphone 3g in Sydney at the launch last friday. Bought it outright, no telstra package, and requested the unlock to be done.

Stupidest cell network i have ever worked with. Nothing like closing your call centre on the busiest weekend in Mobile phone history in Australia and since you had to call the call centre to unlock the phone.....the less said the better.

Come monday and i am back in Malaysia, still locked, no unlock done. Called telstra and Spoke to Mark, very helpful. He took the imie number serial number etc and said it would take 72 hours.

No one told me that i needed to connect the phone to itune and do a reset/update. So i did this yesterday and guess what....a get an error 6 and nothing works, no rollback to 1.1.4....nothing.

So i tried to log into my mac as a new user and update the phone. Hey presto!! the phone loaded Iphone 2.0 and my sim was unlocked so i am a happy man again 🙂

Hope this helps

I posted this a ways back and I was just wondering if anyone had seen it.

In the logs I found this:

2008-07-16 17:21:39.968 iTunes.exe52816:b170: unable to open C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Temporary Files\Firmware\device_map.txt: No such file or directory

No such file or directory? Is that the problem causing error (6)?

I got exactly the same message in the log. Trawled the whole of this discussion, tried every method. Nothing. Always gets to the very end of restoring my iPod Touch and then the message appears. And I don't think it can be iPod's with certain numbers and letters at the end having the problem as mine ends in 14N, not the W4* most have. Also my friends have the same problems, again with different serial numbers.

I took my iPod into the apple store where I live to see if they could help. Told them everything that had happened, they said it's happening with everyone downloading the new iTunes, then upgrading iPod's to 2.0. All they said was to keep checking the forums for answers as apple have no idea how to fix it, at the moment I hope.

Hope that helps.

UPD: when I now try to enter my iPod's serial number in order to check the repair or warranty status, it says: *Our records indicate that this product has been replaced.*

Now, if this new (or refurbished) one turns out to be fully FW 2.0 compliant, in about three months my next machine will be a MacBook. Definitely.

Great products + great service = great company.

I am currently on the phone with apple care .I am also having mine sent in. The support has been wonderful. However. If your ipod is older than 6 months they charge a 29.99 shipping fee. Ask to be transfered to customer relations because your ****** off about that charge and they should end up reversing it for u. After all its apples fault that the ipod touch 2.0 software does not work on this hardware not ours!!

When i get mine send out and then sent back I will update if Its all working.
Sounds to me like there is going to me a recall comming into play soon.

An unknown error occurred (6). A solution, anyone?
