An unknown error occurred (6). A solution, anyone?

Error 6! I won't forget! Here's my problem:
I had no problem paying and downloading the software, iTunes had my iPod Touch backed up without any problem either. But it just wouldn't install the freaking software. I kept getting this error message "An unknown error occurred (6)". I lost count how many times I tried this and i am very frustrated.
This is what I found on the support page regarding what to do with an error 6 and many other errors (2, 6, 9, -18, -48, -50, 1002, 1011, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1608, 1609, 1611, 2003, 2004, -9808).

Anyone encountering the same problem, pls check out the support article and try going through the steps Apple suggested there, see if it will fix the problem cause I went through every single one of them (except using a windows machine) and none of them worked. Sigh~! I am back to 1.1.4 now and Apple will be hearing from me.
10 bucks short and my Saturday gone, I am not happy. (and don't get me started on the $20 I paid in January!!! Fxxx!)

I a nut shell - there isn't an answer.
I bought my first apple product an IPT 16GB in Dec '07, right out of the box it didn't work (screen faulty), took it in an they replaced 24 hours later, good so far.
I was a little upset when the 32GB IPT came out the month after I got my 16GB, didn't see that coming
I was surprised and upset when I had to pay NZ$30 in Jan for an upgrade
Now that I've paid NZ$13 for an upgrade that doesn't work and has lost my Jan upgrades, and was also going to give me the upgrades I'd already paid for in Jan
Will I buy an apple product ever again .....

And I don't want to get started on the fact that NZ is always first to get new apple products but we don't even have an Apple store here so have to deal with distributors .....

@crbenz

I hear you. When the Touch first came out, I went for the 8GB at first. I brought it home and it started acting weird and eventually it stopped working. I had to wait like a week for a replacement. Like you, we don't have an Apple store here in Hong Kong (Beijing 1st Apple Store is opening today!!!), and 3rd party is all we got both in terms of retail and support. Long story short, I couldn't wait and bought the 16GB instead.
Now, I am still waiting for AppleCare (meaning local support) to call me because they 'ran out of stock' to replace my 16GB due to the 2.0 problem. It just sounded so sweet when I read some of you who can do everything at home with the mail in and check status and all in the States.

But...

all in all, I do have respect for the company, so I will keep buying Apple products in the future.

I viewed my itunes purchase record yesterday and reported the issues with my JAN (i.e. it's gone from my IPT because of this udate 2 fault) and 2.0 update (its a c**t of a product and doesn't work). It's a day and a half now and no reply, so I went to report it again via itunes and see they only let you report problems once per product. That's like using caller id and they don't want to hear from me, I really don't like how apple is ignoring us. What is this one complaint per product and if there's anymore you're forbidden to bring it to apples attention. I'm sorry but this is worse than microsoft.

Quick Update...

Okay. I finally have mine replaced with a refurbish Touch at the local authorized service centre. I asked the technician to install the 2.0 while I was there as well and everything went well. Although iTunes didn't recognize the refurb Touch the 1st time it connects after the installation, but it connected with a retry after a restart.

I also asked the technician to restore my old Touch because I want my personal stuff on it cleared. She didn't think much about it and hit restore with the 2.0 update package on her Macbook. So it took forever and the error 6 ended up occurring again. So I don't know if this means anything, but my old Touch was just not meant for the 2.0.

One last thing, my new Touch's serial no. has the W4x ending like my old Touch. So I don't know if the serial no. has anything to do with this issue anymore. BUT, since it is a refurb, the gut could have been replaced anyway...

good luck to those still without 2.0

I had the exact same problem and went to the Apple Store where they restored my iPod to Version 1.1.4. They then told me to retry downloading the 2.0 software again, which you can do for free, and resync. Error 6 all over again!! Got on the phone with Apple Care for three hours over two days and after trying to install 2.0 software from three different Macs, they made an appointment for me at the Apple Store to have them install 2.0 because they think that my download was corrupt for some reason.(Maybe too many people downloading at the same time when Apple was trying to restore their servers?) Sure enough, 2.0 installed perfectly the first time at the Apple Store. This doesn't help those who don't live near an Apple Store, but if you do, give it a shot.

The only problem with this approach is that you, as the owner of the device, can't restore your iPod later on if you need to.

I'm not convinced the problem is with downloads being corrupt because my partner could not update on my iPod Touch from his computer even though it was the same 2.0 download he used to successfully update his iPT. Both iPods are of the same generation (1.1.4 with January Update), purchased weeks apart, yet mine gets "Unknown error (6)" and his worked.

Another here with error 6. I've now gone back to 1.1.4

At the moment I am not very pleased, to say the least, about this situation. I've paid for 2.0 and now I can just sit here and wait for Apple to react on this problem, which apparently I am not alone with.

I am not really sure if I should go to a Apple store and just have the device sent in for repair/replacement. From the feedback I read here most devices got replaced, which would mean that there is some kind of hardware problem with older versions of the Ipod when it comes to updating to 2.0

Quite unpleasant, this whole thing :/

So I get the error 6 also, i took my iPT to the closest apple store, about 40 min away. Get in line, talked to the sales folks and other customers there and waited for my appointment. My time finally comes around and i explain to the rep that i can't get 2.0 on this iPT, it has 1.1.5 on it and i can reload 1.1.5 on it everytime but can not get 2.0 to work. The rep takes it and says "ok, we'll try it here and see if it will update or not." So she lets it start and of course, error 6 pops up. I had to point it to her as she was pulling my info and she immediately undocks it and starts pounding away at her computer again. I asked her if she saw the error code and asked what causes it. She tells me she didn't see exactly what code it was but it's caused by someone who jailbreaks their iPT.

I'm quite flabbergasted that she accuses me of doing such a thing after i showed her my payment history (which contains the paid for january update and 2.0 update). She tells me "uh huh, everyone who's got the error had theirs jailbroken, it's corrupted the iPT, causing it to not be able to restore." As much as i told her it WILL restore, to anything but 2.0 (i just restored it to 1.1.5 again after returning home!), she just brushed it off and now ordered a replacement for the iPT since it's still under warranty.

What BS is that? Are you all, who took it to an apple store, getting accused of jailbreaking or any other "breaking" of the iPT?

This is now working for me, and all I did was a reset on the ipod touch. I phoned Apple support and ran through the install again and got the error 6. I was transferred to the product specialist who told me to reset the Ipod. I unplugged the Ipod, held the home button and the 'on/off' button, then released both when the Apple logo appeared. I then plugged it in again, clicked on "restore", replied "yes" to the questions. It didn't back up the Ipod this time, but extracted the software, then restored the software, then restored music and videos.

I'm pretty sure I reset the Ipod before, but maybe not in this sequence.

Hope this helps someone else.

I have just been to the Apple Store Regent Street London after days and days of error 6 and trying every solution you guys had mentioned. The guy at the Genius Bar gave me a replacement there and then once he realised that it went into recovery after a failed restore. I am pleased and relieved thinking I should have gone earlier. I've now updated to 2.0 and all seems to be working so far. Their was light at the end of the tunnel! ......though it seems there may be other issues to look out for....
