An unknown error occurred (6). A solution, anyone?

Error 6! I won't forget! Here's my problem:
I had no problem paying and downloading the software, iTunes had my iPod Touch backed up without any problem either. But it just wouldn't install the freaking software. I kept getting this error message "An unknown error occurred (6)". I lost count how many times I tried this and i am very frustrated.
This is what I found on the support page regarding what to do with an error 6 and many other errors (2, 6, 9, -18, -48, -50, 1002, 1011, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1608, 1609, 1611, 2003, 2004, -9808).

Anyone encountering the same problem, pls check out the support article and try going through the steps Apple suggested there, see if it will fix the problem cause I went through every single one of them (except using a windows machine) and none of them worked. Sigh~! I am back to 1.1.4 now and Apple will be hearing from me.
10 bucks short and my Saturday gone, I am not happy. (and don't get me started on the $20 I paid in January!!! Fxxx!)

I finally made it to an Apple Store and saw a "Genius" about this issue. She was very hesitant at first to do anything without my computer their, as her tech guides were showing here that this was a computer or iTunes problem. After several minutes, I told her that it did this on my MacBook Pro as well as my iMac. She then hooked it up to one of their MacBooks, and of course error (6) came up again. She tried a few other things...and then gave me a replacement iPod Touch which works beautifully with 2.0.

It MUST be a hardware problem.

I think someone finally figured it out. I have been getting the Error 6. I held down the buttons, then reconnected. I told it to restore. When it asked if I wanted to back up, I said no. I then restored and updated. Was able to restore to previous back up.

I can't believe I'm finally running on 2.0!!! Try it out. I was hesitant, but am wicked excited to play around with it.

I went to a New Zealand apple service agent, they said it was a software issue probably with my PC and I'd need to bring that in and pay to have it looked at, I was very close to swearing at them when they gave me that response. They said I'd need to ring Apple NZ, which is actually in Australia so I did. Went through everything suggested to resolve the error 6 issue, nothing work, told them that at the beginning of the 40 minute phone call. They then asked me to email my log and diagnistic files. I wanted to ask the tech guy was he reading from a script and why wouldn't he admit there's a major issue, because his surprise that I was having a problem wasn't all that convincing (I should have suggested acting lessons). They've now had my files 24 hours and no response.

An update... I went to an Apple Service Center here in Thailand and they took my iPod Touch for diagnosis, and said that there's a hardware problem. And since it was still under warranty, they replaced my iPod Touch within 3 days (had to get the new iPod from Singapore). However, they didn't install FW 2.0. When I got home, I immediately tried to install FW 2.0 and it upgraded flawlessly.

I would like to comment Apple for the support. I just wish that they send out an announcement as to why some hardware could not get upgraded to 2.0. My next purchase would be the rumored Macbook Touch if that is true.

Following my earlier posts on this topic I have now received a replacement IPT.

I have installed 2.0 without any difficulties and am enjoying using the apps available in the app store.

Apple's turnaround on this has been very impressive in that the device was collect last Thursday and a replacement was returned to me the following Tuesday. Having said that I would like to see an explanation of what the difficulties were with the early hardware however I don't suppose that really I care as I have been given a new IPT in exchange.

I'm heading up to my local Apple Store in Southampton on Friday. Is there anything else I need to take to the shop apart from my faulty iPod Touch?

By the way, I've faced the dreaded error (6) message like most of you but after seeing the success of going to the store, I'm going to try that.

So yeah, what do I need to take to the store, apart from the iPod?

I had the 'Error 6' and many others in my first attepmt, and I have since successfully restored mine 4 times after trying this upgrade. The "*Shift + click Restore*" works every time, taking it to a downloaded version 1.1.4 FW.

I have not tried the downgrade to 1.1.2 prior to upgrading to 2.0 yet. If time permits, I'll be trying it tonight.

BTW... in my emails back and forth to Apple, they stressed that this upgrade is a NON-REFUNDABLE purchase, per the iTunes 'legalese' we all acknowledged when we installed it.

An unknown error occurred (6). A solution, anyone?
