An unknown error occurred (6). A solution, anyone?

Error 6! I won't forget! Here's my problem:
I had no problem paying and downloading the software, iTunes had my iPod Touch backed up without any problem either. But it just wouldn't install the freaking software. I kept getting this error message "An unknown error occurred (6)". I lost count how many times I tried this and i am very frustrated.
This is what I found on the support page regarding what to do with an error 6 and many other errors (2, 6, 9, -18, -48, -50, 1002, 1011, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1608, 1609, 1611, 2003, 2004, -9808).

Anyone encountering the same problem, pls check out the support article and try going through the steps Apple suggested there, see if it will fix the problem cause I went through every single one of them (except using a windows machine) and none of them worked. Sigh~! I am back to 1.1.4 now and Apple will be hearing from me.
10 bucks short and my Saturday gone, I am not happy. (and don't get me started on the $20 I paid in January!!! Fxxx!)

I got now 2.00

It Worked for me , too.

Hold On/Off and the Home Button until the Apple Logo appears.
Only Click Restore and Update and it works.

This is my Reason my iPod ends with W4x ... also the special serial number.

Other who has the (6} Error... Try this to see if this a possible Reason for everyone.

count me in.

I'm having the same issues. I have managed to revert back to the old firmware (after much pain though), but every time I'm trying to upgrade to firmware 2.0 I'm getting the same error notification (error 6).
I have re-installed iTunes, as per the instructions for a different error message, with recovery, with out recovery, etc. non of these worked so far :¬(

not very impressed at the moment...

After tracking through all these threads, seems more than a few are pi$$ed at the way this Ugprade has been developed and released by Apple. I'm pasting below excerpts from another post of mine on this very same topic. Shame on Apple, at this point, for attempting to stick its head in the sand on this one....

Had this same problem earlier this week. Was on the phone with Apple Support for over 1.5 hours but had no luck resolving. In fact, Apple Support confirmed that the upgrade to 2.0 is causing major headaches for all Support staff.

I also was getting many errors indicating "The iPod "device name" could not be restored. An unknown error has occured (followed by either a 6, 9, 13, 2004, etc)." Tried everything mentioned in this thread and then some..

Luckily I was able to shift+restore the previous 1.1.4 .ipsw file version to resume functionality but still had no satisfaction knowing I had paid for an upgrade I couldn't use.

Apple Support had no further advice for me other than to try another PC or send in the iPod *at my expense* for assessment even though the device is still under warranty. Basically, Apple's suggestion that I pay shipping costs of $40Cdn plus the original $10 online Upgrade meant I would've been out-of-pocket $50 to diagnose a problem introduced by Apple itself...hmmm. Discovered another interesting tidbit about Apple's product warranty. Fine print reveals that return shipping is covered by them only during the 1st 6 months of the product warranty period...After that you're on your own.

To make a long story short, was both fortunate and successful in upgrading my iPod device using someone else's "Mac" Notebook since all efforts with my Windows XP machine had failed.

Something tells me Apple's QA of their latest iPod/iPhone 2.0 software may have fallen a little short. Given the final recommendations provided by Apple Support, I'd say these hardware or software problems are indeed widely recognized within the corporate wheel yet no one is "officially" responding outside Apple's QA walls. Now this bites...

If Apple aims to corner the market on cross-platform products and software, such as, iTunes, iPods, etc., then they also have to ensure proper QA and follow-on support is equally provided on behalf of "all" of its clients as well. Seriously, with all the marketing stunts targeting Apple's competitors, is this how Steve Jobs and Co. stand by their products and expect to prevail in this field? This can't be good news for Apple...

I've gotten the same error (go figure), so I did the whole switch accounts download previous firmware, etc. but I ended up with the 1604 error. I've read through this whole thread and decided it's not worth my time grueling over a solution so I will be taking my ipod touch to the apple store and see what they do about it.

The only thing that really worries me is that I might have lost already some info stored in my ipod and I can't find any of my previous backups on my computer. Hopefully they are still in my ipod somewhere.

It seems though that a lot of people have succeeded in fixing this error, so this post might be a waste of time :P

If they fix the problem at the store I will do my best and post what they did to fix it and maybe it will help.
(:
Good Luck to everyone!

PS: I've had tons of problems with Apple, so this new error does not surprise me one bit. If you can't get to an apple store, I just suggest to wait it out, surely a problem like this with a thread this long caught their attention and the team will patch things up. But that is not to say that these problems get me more and more frustrated with Apple...

Apple support New Zealand (actually in Australia) has had my log and diagnostic files for 3 days now and no response, so I rang again today and was told that nothing can be done until Monday when they will email engineering for an update. I have probably now spent more time in front of a computer trying the solutions suggested and on hold on the phone with apple support than anyone in recent weeks has spent in line waiting for an iPhone.
There was a lot of press about New Zealand being the first in the world to get the iPhon. But the lack of support for Apple is a news story that I'm now very surprised not to be seeing since this problem is happening worldwide. Anyone know any journo's who might want to do something on "lack of support for apple products when you don't have access to an apple store"

@ crbenz:
I agree with you about the lack of support.
But, since I live in a major city, the lack of support here is not as great as in other countries and cities.

In any case, I went to the apple store today, and I talked to a genius, it was closing time so he was a bit annoyed. Anyways, he said he couldn't restore it with the 2.0 because it is a payed update (I thought that was a bit stupid considering that I could have proven easily by logging in to my itunes account and showing the transaction record but anyways not important), so instead he said he would use the old version. SO, I waited 30 mins and it worked! Supposedly he just put my ipod in the DFU reset (although I had done it before and it didn't work). Then later when I got home I actually opened my ipod (I should have done it before) and I noticed that my ipod had the 2.0 update. The guy had put the 2.0 update and he couldn't tell me? I don't know what happened, but in any case the DFU worked (the holding the home and the lock button thing).

Good Luck to all of you who still are stuck with the brick!
(:
