An unknown error occurred (6). A solution, anyone?

Error 6! I won't forget! Here's my problem:
I had no problem paying and downloading the software, iTunes had my iPod Touch backed up without any problem either. But it just wouldn't install the freaking software. I kept getting this error message "An unknown error occurred (6)". I lost count how many times I tried this and i am very frustrated.
This is what I found on the support page regarding what to do with an error 6 and many other errors (2, 6, 9, -18, -48, -50, 1002, 1011, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1608, 1609, 1611, 2003, 2004, -9808).

Anyone encountering the same problem, pls check out the support article and try going through the steps Apple suggested there, see if it will fix the problem cause I went through every single one of them (except using a windows machine) and none of them worked. Sigh~! I am back to 1.1.4 now and Apple will be hearing from me.
10 bucks short and my Saturday gone, I am not happy. (and don't get me started on the $20 I paid in January!!! Fxxx!)

Hello fellow firmware 2.0 updaters,

After few painstaking moments I have sucessfully unbricked my iPod (whose s/n btw doesn't end with that xW4 something) using following method.

1) Upgraded to iTunes 7.7, tried to update firmware.. error (6) came up
2) Tried update again, even downgrade to 1.1.4, didn't work. My iPod became bricked and after switching on always kept stuck on the "iTunes screen"

Now to the funny part...

3) I have downgraded to iTunes 7.5 (you have to delete *.itl file, iTunes 7.5 gives an error otherwise). If you need proper instructions concerning the downgrade, please google it.
4) Put my iBrick into D F U mode. This is important. There is a difference between "recovery" and "DFU" mode. iPod running in the DFU mode has entirely blank screen! (there are also some guides how to get into DFU on the web)
5) Ran iTunes 7.5 and restored 1.1.4 firmware. Restore succeeded and my iBrick became and iPod again

Hope someone will find this useful.

*The following is relevant to users experiencing the 1604 issue:*

The guy at AppleCare suggested that it might be a "timing error" with the USB sync cable as most of the 1604 errors are caused by a timing error with the sync cable and the 2.0 upgrade; but also said it may be an issue with the iPod Touch.

I went to the local Apple Authorised store (NextByte) on Thursday and explained the issue and they said they had to send the cable off for warranty purposes. So I'd probably have a replacement by Monday. Apple are that tight with their products, that they couldn't even give me a stupid replacement at the same time due to Apple's strict warranty policy! So resigned to the fact that I wouldn't be able to use my iPod Touch until Monday, I went home.

Fortunately I received a message on Friday saying that the cable had arrived as could be picked up. I went back to the store and explained the problem to a couple of staff members and asked if they could install the upgrade for me. After having difficulty logging into my iTunes account on their computers, the guy retrieved his local copy of the upgrade and installed it then and there using my replacement USB sync cable! So now my iPod Touch is FINALLY working with the 2.0 firmware upgrade.

I hope this story might help others. I would suggest sending your cable in for replacement before resorting to sending the iPod Touch in for repair/replacement as in this instance it did appear to be the cable that was causing the incredibly frustr5ating 1604 error.

My IPT has been returned and has had the "Issue Identified" and a replacement pending.

Same with me. I had sent my iPod Touch to Apple last week and they identified a problem that warranted replacement. I got the new iPod yesterday and installed the 2.0 Update without any problems whatsoever.

So, my advice to anyone who cannot install the 2.0 update is to send the device back while it's still under warranty. There is likely some underlying hardware issue that may make future updates a problem.

If it is a hardware issue, then Apple needs to recognize it, and provide a means for folks to "trade in" effected units. I am the second owner of my 16GB iPod Touch, and therefore, I'm not sure what, if any, warranty protection I have.

I have been able to load 1.1.4 and 1.1.5 without issue. Only 2.0 appears to be a problem.

I HAVE been able to load 2.0 using the "Pwnge" tool. This leads me to believe that although it is most likely a hardware issue, that there SHOULD be a software fix that Apple can offer.

My iPod Touch was replaced with a new unit... Went to apple store and asked the technical team to try installing 2.0 update for me. When it failed, they suggested that I do a warranty claim. Four days later, replacement iPod was shipped to the shop. At least the warranty claim is fast...

So again, those facing this problem, try to get your iPod Touch into 'warranty claim' mode instead of 'DFU' mode... LOL
