An unknown error occurred (6). A solution, anyone?

Error 6! I won't forget! Here's my problem:
I had no problem paying and downloading the software, iTunes had my iPod Touch backed up without any problem either. But it just wouldn't install the freaking software. I kept getting this error message "An unknown error occurred (6)". I lost count how many times I tried this and i am very frustrated.
This is what I found on the support page regarding what to do with an error 6 and many other errors (2, 6, 9, -18, -48, -50, 1002, 1011, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1608, 1609, 1611, 2003, 2004, -9808).

Anyone encountering the same problem, pls check out the support article and try going through the steps Apple suggested there, see if it will fix the problem cause I went through every single one of them (except using a windows machine) and none of them worked. Sigh~! I am back to 1.1.4 now and Apple will be hearing from me.
10 bucks short and my Saturday gone, I am not happy. (and don't get me started on the $20 I paid in January!!! Fxxx!)

I have the same problem installing 2.0.1!! When I try to upgrade the iTouch to 2.0.1, iTunes crashes after some secondes with this error message:
EventType : BEX P1 : iTunes.exe P2 : 7.7.1.11 P3 : 4890a5ee
P4 : iTunes.exe P5 : 7.7.1.11 P6 : 4890a5ee P7 : 00094576
P8 : c0000409 P9 : 00000000
As my iTouch is still alive with 1.1.5, and still in warranty I'll bring it to apple support.....

I decided to go back to the Apple Store to ask what exactly happened to my iPod.

They said that the 2.0 overdrives the hardrive, or in other words, pushes it too hard for it to work. He also said that trying to update to 2.0 too many times in a short period might cause permanent damage to the hardrive.

In better words, the iPod cache that is in the hardrive fills over the top and can no longer function.

I'm not sure how exactly the Geniuses do this, but they run some sort of diagnostic software that fixed it.

Hi peeps

..<snip>"

Just to say last night I had exactly this problem and I spent several hours to no avail trying to revive my wife's iPod touch which looked increasingly like it was bricked. 😟

I came home this evening and pugged it in and immediately the red battery icon 'charging' came on. After a short time I started iTunes and tried the 'restore' function again. Instead of the screen going black then a very faint version of the recovery mode icon which I had before, this was strongly illuminated. When the restore process started, instead of getting the dreaded '....error(6)" message, the progress bar appeared and on the iPod, the apple icon was clear and there was the little circular icon spinning round.

After about 30 mins (possibly less), the iPod was fully restored. Not sure what I did right - could be that I just let the iTouch completely discharge. I vaguely remember this as a tip from older models.

Anyway it worked - I have software v 2.01 installed now and all is well....

It's solid-state though!!?? I do know that there's a type of memory effect which limits its lifespan but not THAT much surely? (which is also why it's futile to defrag it...)

There seems to be little consistency with this problem. For example, my first iPod Touch had this error every time I tried to install the 2.0 Update, even from computers that had previously installed the update on other people's iPods. Apple determined my iPod was faulty and sent me a replacement.

The replacement iPod Touch installed the 2.0 update without a problem, but subsequently failed installing the 2.0.1 update twice (same result, "Unknown Error (6)"), but worked after I tried it a third time. In all cases my iPods had just been fully recharged.

I know five other people with an iPod Touch, and none of them ever had the problem at all.

the term "brick" does reffer to a device that will no longer function usually after some upgrade or other modification is made from it's original state. The issue with some of the iPod and iPhones that upgrade to 2.0, an official software release, is that they no longer function, hence they become nice shiney bricks. If this has happened to you, you are well within your rights to get it fixed or replaced. If they give you a run around ask for someone higher up, but I doubt you'll have trouble.

Have you ever heard of giving 110%? That's basically what the hardrive does during a failed 2.0 upate, but the hardrive can't handle it because it wasn't desinged to run the software at that pace. Now for those who can fix this problem themselves, there is a way to fix this problem and get the hardrive up and running and possible to take the 2.0.

I'd be careful before trying to install 1.1.5. I was just updating 1.1.4 to 1.1.5 and was going to wait before thinking about 2.0x. I ended up in an endless restore loop and was only able to get out of it by deleting the 1.1.5 file and going back to 1.1.4, but now it won't re-install my January updates. I've read on another thread that Apple is telling people who got their January updates nuked that the only way to restore it was to buy the 2 update! Yeah, right! I'm going to spend more money to get back something I already paid for and maybe in 6 months have them say: "Oh, to get your 2.1 update back you have to buy 3!!!"
