FYI: OWA setup

I had to monkey with this for a while to get it to work, so I thought I'd post this info note.

Our Exchange server is configured with OWA and with a VPN-secured direct connection. I didn't want to configure VPN on my iPhone, so I went the OWA route. To configure it, I did the following when creating the new account:

- Choose the "Exchange" option
- Set the email to match my email account
- Set the "Username" as requested, with "domain\account name"
- Set the password

When you hit "Next", the configurator tries to verify the account using the server name in the email address. Our OWA server name is not the same as our email account domain (it's webmail.xxx.com, email is jsmith@xxx.com). So when I hit "Next", the account settings were checked and failed. The config dialog returns and asks for the server name explicitly. I entered our OWA server name (NO http:// or https://, and even though the full OWA URL for our server is webmail.xxx.com/exchange, I left off the /exchange as well).

This worked fine. I can sync email, contacts and calendars now.

One additional step I had to do, that might not be relevant for you: Our OWA server does not use SSL, but the configurator assumes SSL when it checks. So I had to let the second verification fail, tell it to keep the account anyways, then go into config and manually set the account to not use SSL.

Thanks for the help. I'm still having a problem - We use Exchange 2003, Active Sync is set up, and i have all the correct info on the iPhone, but no mail, calendar or contacts. When i check mail, it looks like it's syncing -- but nothing.

I can use OWA, no problem.

SSL is turned off at the iPhone level because I kept getting the error message. Anyone know of a detailed instruction/guidelines to follow to get this working?

thanks

I was having the same issue with no mail or contacts on iPhone 3G. It turns out that our Exchange 2003 Front-End was only running service pack 1. Once we upgraded to Exchange 2003 service pack 2 everything worked. The Exchange 2003 Back-End is still running service pack 1.

You can test to see if OMA is working properly by browsing to it and logging in.

https://server/oma

This will at least tell you if ActiveSync/OMA is working. Note: This worked for me even on Exchange 2003 SP1, even though mail was not properly syncing to the iPhone.

Hope this helps.

I am having the same issues as some others with regard to setting up my work email on my new iPhone. I tried browsing to our company's OWA site using the "https://webmail.xxx.com/OMA" address, I get prompted to login and after doing so the page says "Your account is not configured for wireless access. Please contact your administrator".

I was able to get my email my previous Windows mobile device and checked with our helpdesk and my account is still set up for what we call "mobility workplace". Does this mean that the exchange servers are not running the correct service pack on them and that is what is causing me to not be able to set up my corporate email on my iPhone?

This helped a little but I still can't sync. Previously I was entering my email address, domain/username and password at Exchange account setup, and the device would prompt me for the Exchange server name. I entered the server I use for Entourage (we're a small company and use a remote hosting company so it's not as simple as "exchange.company.com" -- there's a lot of weird letters before the name of the remote hosting company and then ".com". Every time I tried this I'd get the message "Exchange account verification failed."

After reading this post I instead entered the OWA server name. I finally got "Exchange account verified" and the device asked me whether I wanted to sync mail, calendars and contacts. But when I went to the Mail app on iPhone a weird thing happened: I saw the account and all the folders I set up (Inbox/Sent/Deleted, etc. plus custom folders I created to store messages) but the messages themselves were nowhere to be found. I also could not send messages from the iPhone. I tried disabling SSL and that didn't work.

So then I tried removing the domain from my "username" in "settings." After that all my folders disappeared and I kept getting prompted for my password. I'd enter the right password every time but the device told me it wasn't correct. I tried disabling SSL but am getting the same dialog box. That's where I am now. I'm also working with my IT guy to make sure ActiveSync is enabled for my device (I'd not been hooked up before for a blackberry or any other device), but so far it doesn't look good and it is VERY frustrating to say the least, following all the hype from Apple about Exchange support.

This is an original iPhone with 2.0 software, BTW.

Hi all,

I found the solution to this problem on my phone, 2 things:
1. Make sure your IT department has allowed mobile access to your account on the server
2. Certificate of your domain (ie exchange.mycompany.com) the company I work for don’t use verisign or others so the domain wont secure when accessing remotely, to fix this do the following:
a. Go to your company webmail/exchange server using your web browser
b. Double click on the padlock in the bottom right of the screen, then:
i. ON FIREFOX – Click the security tab, then view certificate, then details, then export, and save it as a X.509 Certificate (DER), and make sure you type .der in the filename at the end (save it to your desktop)
ii. ON IE – click Details tab, Click copy to file, click next, choose DER encoded binary, click next, call it certificate.der, click finish (it will be saved to your desktop
c. Now send an email to another account on your iphone (you will need another email account already set up, so .mac, gmail, etc etc) with the .der file attached
d. Download the email address and click on the attachment
e. Install the certificate (the iphone will warn you)
f. All done!

For me this got it working perfectly!

Cheers
