Phone turns off when taking away from face

During a conversation, if I move the phone away from my face the conversation is cut off, screen goes blank and phone turns off. I don't get the screen with the options including putting call on speakerphone, pressing end call, etc. What the heck? Anyone else?

I hate that you're having the same problem, but at least it's not just me! It really is a pain. I was out today and had to put the phone down for a second...BOOM...conversation kaput and phone off. I guess I'll have to call Apple about this one. I'll post what they tell me. Please do the same if you also call them. Thanks!

Are both of you using a case on the iphone? Mine did that when I put it in my old Iphone case. Since I have taken it out, it doesn't do it any longer.

Someone on here said that the new 3G has more sensors and the old cases cover or interfere with the sensors. Not sure how or why that would disconnect a call though. Try it without a case to see if it works.

The correct feature is when you move the phone from your face the screen will go blank for just a moment and then you get another screen allowing you I think 6 options, along with the end call slide bar. I don't get that screen when I use my case. The phone call is ended and the phone shuts down. I like the feature, too. ; )

Pressing that button should not end your call but bring your screen back. Normally I press that button and the select my options and go. I have to actually press the red end call bar to end a call. I can put someone on speaker and look up a phone number, add someone to the call etc and do several things on the screen without ending the call. The button at the bottom is kind of your space bar or tab.
That is how I think of it.

It is hard to get used to a touch phone. My cheek-bones have made many selections for me and hung up on people as well. My head set works well for me.

From what I've seen just about all of the new cases take the extra sensors into account. Most of them have opted to just leave the top area open, whereas the first generation cases often just had a small cutout for the earpiece. I've seen a few (Marware I think) that are closed off up there but do have a second cutout in the sensor area.

I was having this same issue consistently for the past day and a half where my screen would activate when it was against my face (my cheekbone would hit the speakerphone, etc) and then the screen would deactivate once I took it away from my face. I had my original iSkin REVO case on the phone. Switching to an open Belkin case tonight has fixed the problem.

I am hoping I don't have to replace my case that I was using for my old phone. My husband bought a case when we bought his new iphone but it covers the camera area. He has not complained of any problems but he is missing some calls for whatever reason. He has always missed calls in the house.

I have never had that problem before the new phone.

I did the same thing with disconnecting people when I bought my first iphone. I'm very clumsy and it took me awhile to get used to it. I'll bet your phone and your case is fine and you just need to get to know each other! 🙂
