iPhone 3G Version 2.0 home button not working instantly when pressed

It shouldn't be a big pain unless the Genius tries to argue with you. Really, its a factory defect that hinders the operation of the phone within normal use. All you have to tell them is that the button isn't sensitive enough, and demonstrate how, making sure to push it in a manner where it wont function. For me i had to go through 2 Genius's at different stores.

Got my "advance replacement" from Apple today and all is well with this unit. Huge difference from the old one. Relatively painless backup and restore process--hopefully there are no issues with the return portion of the replacement.

I am also having the same problem. This is so annoying. so you guys think its a software problem, rather than a hardware problem? it doesn't only happen when you try to go back to the main home, but also when you try to lock your screen buttons after moving them as well.

I have the same problem on my 16GB black iPhone. It just didn't work. So I cannot go to all the other menus but make a call. I think it is a hardware problem since the touch screen and all still works but the button. I strongly suggest you backup everything before you head out to have it replaced since all your contacts will be not be in the new one (they don't do backup and restore on my store). Also do the restore yourself at home (connecting iTunes and doing a restore) to at least have a sense of security that your pictures and contact information is deleted (it can still be recovered from what I heard though) but its better than being there waiting for somebody to see. FYI - after my restore it still did not work. I went back to the store and they replaced it with a new one (luckily there's a stock). It may be one of those rare defects which I just hope my new one will have the same problem.

Ever since I did a restore to get the firmware up to date my home button is sticking a bit. it's not as responsive as before and has never been as responsive as my gen 1 iphone. 😟 I mean the phone still works but it's just slower.

Got my 8gb iPhone yesterday, having the same problem. The home button works sometimes, sometimes it doesn't.

I'll have to get it replaced...

The 2.01 update is available as of tonight 8/4. After downloading and installing it, I found the Home button to be much more responsive!

Not for me. If you don't hit the home button directly in the middle it won't work. i never had this problem on my gen 1 iphone. Disappointing and very annoying.
