iPhone 3G stuck at the Apple logo screen; will not boot!

My iPhone 3G has been working all day. I rebooted it because it was hanging when trying to use some apps, and now it's hung at the Apple logo. It will not boot fully. I have tried to reboot the phone many times but I get the same problem. I let it sit there for 30 minutes and it does nothing.

Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it without doing a Restore?

Ethan

this is so infuriating!!! i've been a good boy. i swear i have. after multiple lockups, i decided that if i simply didn't update any apps or install any new apps that i'd be golden. well, for a couple weeks now, i have been! my iPhone has worked perfectly with no faults and no lockups.

but that was until i decided to download the new 2.0.2 firmware. wow.... BIG mistake. i haven't installed a single new app or updated any old ones because i just KNEW it would lockup again and i'd be restoring it.... yet again... but i know now that i didn't even NEED to do that. yep! just installing the latest firmware has done it for me. woohoo!! here comes another evening of hours spent restoring my iPhone... yet again...

i have this very very intense love/hate relationship with my iPhone. its such an amazing device that i love using it. yet when it crashes like this, i hate hate hate it so. 😟

All I know is that when I deleted my Apps off of my phone and then turned it off and then back on, the ones that had had updates in the past where back on my phone, even though I had deleted all the Apps which is what lead me to believe that it might have multiple versions within the phones memory. While manually deleting them again directly off the phone, it rebooted and froze again.

All I know is that after getting rid of all the extra versions from my iTunes folder, and re-syncing it as a new iphone it hasn't frozen in over a week. Before cleaning up the folder I had restored my iphone is safe-mode five different times (twice as a new iPhone and three times from the backups) and it would freeze all over again within a day becoming useless until I got home and restored it.

So it might not be correct but for some reason its worked for me, and if anyone else tries it out, please post if its made a difference.

And for reference, I have 49 Apps on my phone currently and like I said, not frozen once since.

Here's one for you. Just received my Iphone 3G today. Tried to download my songs via itunes. Itunes updated to v7.7.1.11 and said there was an update for the iphone; so I accepted and itunes downloaded and attempted to install on my iphone. The iphone update got to approx 80% and then I received a message stating the update failed and to do a restore to bring the phone back to the factory settings. I selected restore and after approx 5 minutes the restore failed. I have tried the restore process an additional 3 times with the same result. I uninstalled itunes and reinstalled an earlier version with the same results. Now my iphone is stuck at the screen that shows the itunes and usb adapter logos. I haven't even made 1 call on the phone yet! What do I do now? Thanks in advance.

Check that out!!

Thanks, but read that article carefully. It is discussing an entirely different issue (I wish my biggest iPhone problem was crashing apps - on my phone, the ENTIRE PHONE crashes. Big difference.) ...

Sorry, but that "solution" is entirely unacceptable to those of us who bought our phones after hearing so much about the App Store from Apple (the keynote in June, walkthrough videos posted at apple.com, etc) and especially for those of us who have dropped $200+ on apps since July 11th.

As has been posted repeatedly: the solution is to gain read/write access to the iPhone's file system, otherwise known as jailbreaking. Once you can SSH in to rename files, recovering after a system failure (otherwise known as ALoD, or "Apple Logo of Death") is a simple affair. 😉

Unfortunately, this is NOT true. 2.0.2 still has the same issues. 2.0.2 in fact is only meant to resolve "some" of the 3G connection issues, and was not meant for this (per discussion with Apple support). However, the "tip" from the link to not have more than two pages of apps should work for a lot of people. Basically, the more apps you put on the device, the more unstable it gets, so if you limit the number of apps, you are safer for now until a fix is released.

I have upgraded to 2.0.2 and have had it crash 3 times since, so I can confirm that 2.0.2 does NOT solve this problem.

Spoke to the Apple Genius, followed their advice, did the upgrade to 2.0.2 and it's cured... iPhone restarts every time, and more importantly hasn't crashed, so doesnt need a restart!!!!

I recommend upgrading!

sorry, but the 2.0.2 upgrade DOES NOT fix this issue. read my last post. i was running just fine for over a week and ALL i did was upgrade my firmware to 2.0.2 and the issue came back before i was even able to use my phone with the new firmware. the usual several hour restore was the only solution as usual.

while that may seem to help, its not the solution. i stopped updating and adding apps from the iPhone and started doing them only through iTunes. problem still occurred. the key is to not update or install ANY apps from ANYWHERE. that for me seemed to be the only solution to avoid the issue. unfortunately when you upgrade firmware you're running into the same problems again as i did.

After 12 days of up time I am now just finishing a restore...again!
A couple of observations.
I was stable using iTunes 7.7 with 2.0.2 update.
Got brave enough last night (after reading several positive articles & apologies alleged from Steve Jobs) I dove in head first.
Upgraded to 7.7.1 and with-in 15 minutes was honored to be presented with the "Apple logo screen of Death"!
My questions for Apple would be:
Why oh why does iTunes do a back-up when support tells us not to use it after the Apple screen of Death?

Why don't I have a way of restoring prefs so my data can be restored?

What good is the calendar if it doesn't reliably back up to .me? Is actually writing important dates & appointments down in a day timer still recommended by Apple, since you cannot depend on the iPhone's stability?

Can we get a refund on all Apps purchased from the app store since I'm no longer sticking with this disaster you call iPhone?

Can I cancel my AT&T contract and move back to Verizon which actually allowed me a reliable way to communicate using a dependable service & phone?

Can I get a total refund from Apple for the 5 iPhones I own, or are they gonna be written off as a bad investment?

Ditto. 2.0.2 does not fix it.

This is an issue that "takes some time" to get to. It's threshold. It typically doesn't happen when there's a minimum of apps.

So when folks say, "I did this and that, then a restore, and now it works great", they are not putting these scenarios to a real test. The issue exists, and exists in the way that we've deduced.
