iPhone 3G stuck at the Apple logo screen; will not boot!

My iPhone 3G has been working all day. I rebooted it because it was hanging when trying to use some apps, and now it's hung at the Apple logo. It will not boot fully. I have tried to reboot the phone many times but I get the same problem. I let it sit there for 30 minutes and it does nothing.

Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas on how to fix it without doing a Restore?

tosco49 try the restore:

1. Connect to iTunes
2. Hold the Power and Home button at the same time.
3. Count to 10/15
4. When finish counting release the power button and hold on the Home button.
5. iTunes will reconize an iPhone in a recovery mode and you can restore your iPhone.

See if works. All your data will be lost. And pray if the last "recover" from your iPhone works, it said "corrupted" for me!

WOW! I a just lovin my iPhone. I haven't had any really problems with it at all. I am on the latest firmware 2.02 and I have installed almost every free App there is, plus some paid ones. No dropped calls, no frozen iPhone, no keyboard troubles. I do have a large list of things that the iPhone should do that most other basic cell phones do, but thats it. Gee, nock on wood.

Now I am worried after reading all these negative repots that my iPhone is going to melt down, or blow up.

I finally made iphone work after reading this:

+"...This is a known bug, and sadly the only solution at the moment is to have your Mac or PC nearby so you can Restore the iPhone by holding down the Home Button whilst connecting it to iTunes. This of course will lose any data / photos / SMS etc that have not been backed up....+"

Sorry Garret, but I find this really hard to believe. How many apps in total is that? How did you install them all? What version of iTunes are you using (7.7 or 7.7.1), as some have speculated this "might" make a difference? Is there any part of the phone in particular that you don't use... maybe something you don't sync that everyone else here is trying?

Sorry for the 20 questions... but if you don't mind please respond, as if it truly works for you, finding out the differences between your configuration and the rest of us may answer some questions for those of us stuff with either no apps or a phone that crashes all the time.....

Thanks

Yes, I think must of us monitoring this feed are quite familiar with the issue, but for those newly experiencing this issue, I can see why it is hard to go through this LONG thread.... so here is a basic recap, which I will try to keep very open... please look through the thread above for more details....

Sure fire, legal, Apple supported way to get your phone working again if you have an Apple Screen of Death:
1) Hard Reset the phone, to do so press and hold the Sleep button (the long button on the top right of the phone) and the Home button (the only button on the bottom front of the phone) for about 10 seconds and the phone will turn off. Let go of the sleep button first or else the phone may try and turn back on.
2) Press and hold the Home button and connect it to you computer with iTunes open. Keep the button pressed until the screen on the phone changes from the apple logo to a connect to itunes image. This take about 10 seconds.
3) iTunes will alert you that it has detected the phone is in restore mode, and will ONLY let you restore it. Yes that means at this time you will lose anything unsaved. (The only expection is that it seems that the photos may still be accessible, but I cannot vouch for that)
4) Restore the phone using the latest firmware. So far no firmware appears to fix this issue, so there seems to be no reason not to use 2.0.2 at this time.
5) When the phone is done restoring (about 10 minutes), iTunes will prompt you to setup the phone. DO NOT TRY TO RESTORE FROM BACKUP. Trying to do so will usually not work anyway, but if it is successful, the phone will usually not work right at all.
6) Feel free to restore all the media you like, but be careful with applications.... see below for details on why...

What is the cause?
Well based on my experience and the massive feedback in this thread, it definiately appears to be the installation of applications that causes this issues. Basically the more apps you install the worse the phone gets and more likely you are to get a crash. Most people are having good luck limiting their apps to around two pages of apps. If you try to add a whole lot of apps, then you risk causing this issue again (until Apple fixes it of course).

Also, as you install apps, the installation process for future apps takes longer based on the file sizes of the ALREADY EXISTING apps. I have no idea what causes this, but you can replicate it very easily. However, there is a easy way to install apps after a restore to help minimize your time. To do this, first find out the file sizes of the apps. To do so navigate to the directory where your iTunes library is (on the mac this is usually <user>\Music\iTunes... and in this directory your mobile apps should all be in a folder called "Mobile Applicaitons". You should be able to see the apps and the sizes for the files here. (As a note, you will notice that apps you have updated will have multiple copies, this is b/c iTunes keeps copies of the old apps when new updates are found, but the file with the highest number next to it should be the latest version and the version iTunes will install by default).
Once you know the file sizes (and know which ones you want to install), go into iTunes and Sync the apps one by one starting with the SMALLEST app going to the largest. THIS WILL SAVE YOU A LOT OF TIME, TRUST ME..... doing it this way, I go my current list of apps installed in about 45 minutes. If I let Itunes try to install them all in one sync (in alphabetical order), it took over 2 hours.

So far apple has not released any official workaround for this issue. There are rumors based on an email from Steve Jobs that this issue "might" be fixed with an upcoming release in September, however, in this email, Steve is referencing a slightly different issue with the phone and thus it can't be guarenteed that he is aware of this issue and that the upcoming fix is meant to resolve it or not.

This post has discussed a potential workaround. This workaround involves jailbreaking your phone. This is NOT supported at all by apple, and not recommended by them. I personally have not tried this, so I cannot say it works or not, but if you would like more details, see some of the replies above (although keep in mind that some have been removed as again this is not something Apple sanctions.).

I hope this quick recap helps those scanning this thread from the bottom up. I personally have had to restore over 40 times to date. I have had A LOT of experience with it (unfortunately) and have been in contact with Apple Support. So far this is the best I can offer myself and others at this time... hopefully things will change soon though....

Count me in on this problem too. This apple logo thing has happened to me on many occasions, and I'm guessing it relates to the app store. I was updating an app, when suddenly my phone went frozen. I tried to reboot, but yet again all I get is Apple logo. I really thought Apple was different, and I had a lot of faith in the company. The iPhone 3G or at least the 2.0 software is ridiculously buggy, and I've been considering getting an Blackberry Bold instead. My AppleTV, and Airport Extreme have also recently been giving me problems. I felt like I've let Apple infiltrate my whole life, and I'm paying the consequences for the good times now. I feel foolish for bolstering apple this long to my friends.
