iPhone 3G not charging in BMW with BMW factory kit

When I plug my iphone 3G into my BMW factory integration kit it does not charge the phone. All other functions work fine. The phone does charge if I charge it with using the A/C adapter. Any known issues with this? Could the iPhone be defective?

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.4), iPhone 3G

Alpine referred me to a company called Scosche who makes a product called passPORT selling for $30. Link below:

Scosche sales let me know that the product will be available October 15th through the Apple Store.

The Alpine technical support rep also said that Alpine is working on a cable that will replace the interface altogether, making an adapter like the passPORT unnecessary. No word on when it will be released and for what price.

My opinion: Neat product. 30$: too expensive.

And: gotta carry it around, or buy 3, in my case...

2 cars, 1 alarm clock... and if I were to get a boom box........

Pulling the Pin was a mistake, for me. (Firewire pin that was receiving the 12 volt is no longer present on the Iphone 3G).

I hope the next Iphone gets his pin back... and while we're at it: increase the battery life, make it thinner a bit, and not as wide as it is now (the 3G is wider than the 1st gen), I'd also add a software for voice dialing (Law here forbids manipulating any phone while driving)...

Oh well, the Iphone remains awesome... Apple's decision though, are sometimes questionnable...

Just to make sure...this adapter will charge the iphone, but I still wont be able to play music via the car stereo right?

The adapter has one female, and one male dock connector. It goes between the car stereo's connector and the iPhone. Everything should work as before, except it will now be able to charge the phone.
There is one adapter that claims to be shipping now:

Malcolm is correct.
I have my RIDAX adapter on order. Hope to get it soon so I can try it out.
RIDAX claims that
"Note! that it will only convert the charging power to suit the iPhone 3g and extend other signals on the dock connector. If the accessory you plan to use together with this charge converter is not compatible with the iPhone 3g for some other reason, this adapter will not change that incompatibility. But the adaptor will maintain all previous functionality (pass through), so if your configuration has been able to do what you want except for charging not being supported, this adaptor will maintain that functionality while adding the charging capability."

So basically, you will still play music while charging at the same time.

Watch out and keep your receipt. It looks like the latest softrware update for the iPhone (2.2) breaks alot of 3rd party/non-apple chargers/Radio Adapters/Docking units.

My Peripheral docking unit for my PT Cruiser used to charge and play back. With 2.2, this little yellow yeild sign comes up and says that the charger isn't made to work with this ipod. Why????????????
