iPhone 3G Reception Problems? You're Not Alone

I have the same problem with 3G coverage. I am suppose to be in a strong 3G coverage area at home. I only have 1 bar. Traveling around town (Sacramento area) my 3G coverage changes dramatically. From 1 bar to full bars? Not sure if its working properly or not??? Anyhow, this was posted on Engadget. After they exchanged their iPhone the problem went away? Could it be true? Is it the netork or our iPhones? Lets all hope nothing is wrong with our iPhones!!!!

iPhone 3G Reception Problems? You're Not Alone

One of the more disturbing things coming out of the iPhone 3G launch is reports of suspiciously poor 3G reception and speeds. Specifically, I've seen several people report one bar - specifically, one bar - of 3G reception in areas where other devices report strong reception. (More complaints at Engadget.)

This may be a problem with a batch of iPhones, or with something in AT&T's network, though I've also seen someone reporting the problem on O2 in the UK. The first review iPhone we got had this problem - it would mysteriously drop from four bars of 3G to one for no apparent reason, while our Motorola RAZR2 V9 reported better reception. Then it would shoot back up to four bars for no apparent reason a few minutes later. That unit would also occasionally throw up an "invalid SIM" error, requiring a reboot. That phone also had hideously slow 3G data speeds in the 50 kbps-150 kbps range, so the missing bars weren't just a display issue; there was something wrong with the way the phone was hitting the network.

We exchanged that iPhone for a different unit and no longer had the problem. We took the new iPhone and carried it around comparing it to a Motorola V9, and the two phones connected roughly the same number of calls on the 3G network. The new unit also had much higher data speeds in the same locations - still not great, in the 300-400 kbps range, but at least reflecting 3G.

I have a 8gb iPhone 3g, Now I dont live in a 3g area but i get very inconsistent bars, going from 4 to 1 all the time.

Also does AT&T have some sort of number to call to update the roaming capabilities? When I had verizon you dialed a number like *223 or soemthing and it would update the roaming capabilities but in some instances it would improve your signal overall.

Just got off the phone with a very nice rep.... there is thread after thread on numerous other message boards about this issue.

The rep I just talked to is forwarding the 2 apple disscussions I found to the Apple people who review the problems discussed on this board.

We exchanged emails so he can keep me informed. This appears to be world wide!

I have the 8 gig.

I also have same problem with my 16gig iphone3g.
I went to Apple and genius guy told me that
its because that phone is holding on to previous cell tower.
I should turn off the phone and on if that happends.
I said, it only happends when I put it on 3G.
He said.. that can't happen as 3G and Edge does not conflict with
reception..
Sigh..I guess no solution here.

I have the same problem in Hong Kong 16 Black iphone with very poor reception. The iphone has problems swtiching from 2G to 3G networks, seems to take a very long time. I have to put my phone in airplane mode, then back to off, before it connects to 3G network. Hong Kong 3G has great reception, so I think the problem is related to the iphone.

Any solutions?

My wife and I got 16 GB iphone 3G's (white and black, respectively). My wife has dropped several calls on it over the past few days. When I've observed her drop a call, I've told her (based on suggestions on the forums) to turn off 3G. We then observe the reception to go from 1-2 bars on 3G to 4 or 5 bars on Edge. This is in the San Fernando Valley, where AT&T claims 3G coverage just blankets the whole valley. I tend to believe them.

From the other comments I'm seeing around here, there are consistent 3G reception problems around the globe. This would seem to support the hypothesis that this is an iphone problem, not a network problem. I hadn't noticed it much because I'd been holed up for the weekend exploring the iphone's features on my home wi-fi network.

I have the same issue in London.

I have two iPhones, a white 16GIG and Black 16GIG, one for me and one for my girlfriend.

They both come form different sources, one from the Apple store, the other O2 by an upgrade.

I have had signal problems with both of them, I had the old iPhone and it worked perfectly at my office with full signal. I have now had 3 calls go straight to answer phone when the phone is sat on the desk doing nothing.

I see the signal bar go from 1 to 4 bars and back for no reason. If I cup the iPhone in my hands to cover the back I can force it down to 1 bar it seems ... very annoying!

I live in hope it is a software issue!

Same bad reception issue here in Munich with 8 GB.

Have you guys checked the signal strength in dbm? * 3001#12345# * will change the bars to numbers in dbm.

-88 to -100 will cause data/call quality issues, anything below -100 is worse. I get values between -91 to -103, which is really bad.

I even get dropped calls outside my house, within a very well covered area ...

has apple actually tested the iPhone 3G outside the lab??
