iPhone 3G Reception Problems? You're Not Alone

I have the same problem with 3G coverage. I am suppose to be in a strong 3G coverage area at home. I only have 1 bar. Traveling around town (Sacramento area) my 3G coverage changes dramatically. From 1 bar to full bars? Not sure if its working properly or not??? Anyhow, this was posted on Engadget. After they exchanged their iPhone the problem went away? Could it be true? Is it the netork or our iPhones? Lets all hope nothing is wrong with our iPhones!!!!

iPhone 3G Reception Problems? You're Not Alone

One of the more disturbing things coming out of the iPhone 3G launch is reports of suspiciously poor 3G reception and speeds. Specifically, I've seen several people report one bar - specifically, one bar - of 3G reception in areas where other devices report strong reception. (More complaints at Engadget.)

This may be a problem with a batch of iPhones, or with something in AT&T's network, though I've also seen someone reporting the problem on O2 in the UK. The first review iPhone we got had this problem - it would mysteriously drop from four bars of 3G to one for no apparent reason, while our Motorola RAZR2 V9 reported better reception. Then it would shoot back up to four bars for no apparent reason a few minutes later. That unit would also occasionally throw up an "invalid SIM" error, requiring a reboot. That phone also had hideously slow 3G data speeds in the 50 kbps-150 kbps range, so the missing bars weren't just a display issue; there was something wrong with the way the phone was hitting the network.

We exchanged that iPhone for a different unit and no longer had the problem. We took the new iPhone and carried it around comparing it to a Motorola V9, and the two phones connected roughly the same number of calls on the 3G network. The new unit also had much higher data speeds in the same locations - still not great, in the 300-400 kbps range, but at least reflecting 3G.

I have good news, at least for me. I'm getting the same 5 bars in 3G, but I'm now getting speeds of between 180kbps and 250kbps regularly. Additionally, my call quality has gotten much, much, much better.

As I was thinking before, this was probably an issue with AT&T's network in NYC and it appears to be fixed. I'll be testing throughout the day, much to the consternation of my boss.

Hi, same problem in Germany / TMobile.

I have a white 16 Gb iPhone. Reception is really bad in either 2G and 3G mode. The iPhone fails many calls while dialing and also gives strange sounds, like a fax machine shortly before it fails. German T-Mobile do not have an answer to this, except to switch to 2G manually - but this does not solve my problem - I then STILL have weak/no reception.

I wish some people from Apple read this thread and come up with a solution fast.

This ISSUE IS UNANSWERED conclusively. To sum up what I've been reading:

Mossberg reports they've sold 1 Million phones this past weekend.

Forums all indicate a LOT of problems with 3G reception, dropped calls, low speeds, inability of the phone to auto-toggle over to Edge/2G when 3G is insufficient.

Techs and gurus say things like -- your phone's holding onto a one bar node/cell, reset 3G. Have also read, 3G network is busy, you're being passed to nodes/cells further from your location, thus lower bars.

Other AT&T 3G phones working fine. Other 3G service providers working fine.

Theories that AT&Ts 3G network is swamped, but now reports on other networks in Canada and Europe indicate same performance. It's not AT&T 3G, maybe not 3G networks at all -- coming to conclude it's the iPhone.

First press reports stated they swapped a phone and problem went away -- hardware issue.
Some reports of Chicago and NY that 3G is working fine -- thus, bad batch of iPhones / hardware issue.

Apple has yet to conclusively say it's a hardware issue, but forums report some people are able to return/swap the phones -- works for some, problem gone. Others still having issues (did they swap for same hardware batch, still got a bad one?)

Who knows?!??! All I know is, my 14 day window is tickin down on my 16G White iPhone. Walnut Creek, CA is within the AT&T 3G network, my 3G service is one bar to non-existant. My edge service is 3-4 bars where my AT&T blackberry is constantly 5.

I waited for and paid for a 3G experience.
And I'm not getting it.

Thinking I'd better schedule a genius appt soon or I'll get one past my 14 day window with the rate this issue is expanding.

Live in Little Neck - Queens. Same exact problem. When I try to use 3G I get 1 bar with poor data and dropped calls. It is unusable. I really hope that this is something Apple can fix. I will be more than upset for spending $15 a month more for service that I can't use.

This is definitely a problem with the phone and not the network. I have friends that have stood next to me and get 5 3G bars when I get 1 on the iphone.

Hey I have the same issues! I don't get better then edge results on 3G anywhere in Los Angeles.
And I truly mean that!
At first I thought it was coverage but from what I been gathering it's definitely an issue with the iPhone 3G.

I been driving around using the native app inetworktest!
Results vary but never go beyond edge performance.
And don't call Apple because all they do is waste you're time blaming it on you're particular iPhone or AT&T.
