Exchange Active Sync Frustrations

I have read through all of the posts and it feels like I have tried everything I can think of. I have fixed OMA on my exchange server. (By the way, Sharepoint, multiple domains, and ASP.Net 2.0 all can break OMA (Activesync) Microsoft has docs on fixing all of these scenarios.

I am now at the point where I can browse to my server from my iPhone going to https:\\<servername>\OMA and login to my mailbox. I can pull up text versions of my inbox, contacts etc. from Safari in the iPhone. I have also installed our self issued cert on my iPhone. (And it no longer prompts me to accept the cert in safari or mail.) (I also confirmed that Exchange has Activesync enabled.)

On the iPhone Exchange account creation, the account verifies only after I type in the server name. After I choose what items I want to sync it says "Configuring sync for Exchange", then changes to "Configuring sync for (null)" briefly. After that when I get into mail it tells me it is updated with the current date and time. When I try to send a message it says "Cannot send Mail: An error occurred while delivering this message." This is the same message I was getting before I fixed OMA.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have 11 iPhones I need to configure for Exchange next week at two different offices, so I really need to get mine working. Thanks for reading!

i disagree. my iPhone will sync with one Exchange Server, but will not sync with another -- the phone is not the problem, but the settings on the server create the problem. Both servers have Go Daddy certs, Exchange 2003 SP2, etc. We are working on the specific differences between the two server settings to find the anomalies and make the changes.

I will say that Apple needs to give a very specific white paper on EXACTLY what is required at the Exchange level (i.e., settings drill-down checklist on IIS for OMA, Active-Sync, etc.) to help those of us who are desperate to get our corporate email to sync on their phones.

Show a little love, Apple! (and thanks for the App store - it helps pass the time while the IT guys work feverishly to help us out!) 🙂

I've tried turning FBA off and I've even got it turned off right now, but still nothing. I'm trying now to set the log levels for some of the components in Exchange to high and see if I get any event logs when I try to create a new exchange account in my iPhone.

I don't understand why I can't find any good topics on "Configured sync for (null)" because that strikes me as a very odd and quite honestly a bad move by Apple, not having a good error mechanism on the Exchange / Mail features.

Still not working for me either.

Windows 2003 R2 SP2
Exchange 2003 SP2
Single server for frontend and backend
Form Base Auth turned off
Followed instructions to setup new virtual diretory (exchange-oma) that does't require secure connections.

I still get the same thing. Everything seems to work during setup, but when I check my mail all I have is a "Inbox" entry under my exchange account and when I look in that folder it says "Checking Mail..." breifly and then says "Updated 08/01/2008 8:13 PM" but no mail shows up.

I'm seriously desperate here. Any help is appreciated.

Microsoft apparently doesn't have a single handy document that lists every version of the AS protocol and the corresponding release, but a little digging reveals enough info to discover:

1. Exchange 2003 shipped with ActiveSync 2.0
2. Exchange 2003 SP2 bumped that to 2.5
3. Exchange 2007 ships with ActiveSync version 12.0
4. Exchange 2001 SP1 bumps that up to 12.1

Perhaps the better mention is you should be running Exchange 2003 SP2 or Exchange 2007.

Scott,

You might also try, if you have a Mac handy, to tether your phone and launch the iPhone Configuration Utility. When you connect your phone it will show up in the iPCU sidebar and if you select it you'll see a Console tab. That gives you a view into the phone's system log where you can watch for messages from dataaccessd when you attempt to connect. It might throw out some errors that might point you in the right direction.

Also, you might consult your IIS logs for any information from the phone's connection attempts.

Hi ! I have been dealing with this exact problem since I got the new iPhone, Almost a month ago... I had people coming to the office, I even had an Apple Genius appointment.. Nothing worked..

I hate to say it, but I had to pay the $175 at http://www.computerrepairservice.net/blog

He did a great job, after close to an hour, the problem was solved...

I personally just had no other choice, local technician came here and even the Apple Genius guy could not solve it.

Regardless of this, it is a shame that Apple is not giving some formal word on this issue, that looks like very simple to solve.

Good luck to all..

If you have FBA (Forms Based Authentication) enabled on a single-server environment then follow Microsoft KB 817379 ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817379).

Another good troubleshooting step would be to try resetting your Exchange virtual directories by following KB 883380 ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883380). I recommend doing that before following KB 817379.
