Unknown Error Occured 4280

I never had a problem burning music to any brand of audio cd's until I upgraded to iTunes version 5. Now I can't burn a cd. I have upgraded twice and I now have version 6. I have a Dell 4600C. I have slowed the burn speed down to the slowest speed possible. It will start the burn and go for 20 seconds or so, then a window pops up and it says," The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred.(4280)" The music I am trying to burn is music I have just purchased from iTunes and it has never been burnt to a disc before, so it isn't because it has been burned too many times. I am really frustrated and I wish I would have never upgraded to the newer version of iTunes. Any help anyone can give me will be hugely appreciated.

Me too! I'm piggy-backing onto this help message and hope that there is an answer somewhere out there. I subscribe to Audible .com and used to use Audible Manager to burn audiobooks to CD. Now with the iPOD I use the software that imports the books directly into iTunes. Apparently I can't have both.

I've created a playlist for the Audible file, acknowledged that I want it burned as an Audio CD, inserted a brand new CD-R in my CD drive and have successfully burned the first part. When it finishes, I am asked to insert the next disk and after a few minutes, this one fails. This has happened with three different books, always on the second disk. The error message I get is the same as the one Michelle reported. I can find no mention of this on the apple support site. What is happening?

Hello, I went to that article and did the fix, (I have a TEAC CD/RW), then I anxiously waited while I tried to burn a cd, but the same error came up. I am so disappointed. So, I downloaded yet ANOTHER new version of iTunes and restarted my comp. and tried to burn a cd....same error. I wish I would have NEVER upgraded from the version 4 whatever before the new version 5 came out. That's when all my problems started. I am going to go buy a different brand of cds and hopefully maybe they will burn. Thank you for your help. Anyone who has any other suggestions, please send them on, I'd love to hear them.

I was having problems burning music I had purchased. Every time I tried to burn the software would check the play list, initialize the CD, and begin burning the first track. After 10-20 sec the burner tray would eject and an error message (4280) would appear. I discovered that if I created the playlist, and hit the burn icon without putting a CD in the burner tray, the software would automatically eject the tray and prompt me to insert a CD. After putting in the CD the software would verify the media and burn successfully.

Hi Bryan,
I just tried your suggestion and I thought it was going to work because it went a little longer before the box of doom popped up, but it didn't work. Only this time it came up with a different error message (4315). I have bought over $600 in music from iTunes and now I can't burn a cd. It is frustrating and I think I will no longer purchase any more music from them. The reason I got them in the first place was because they worked so well and it was so easy to use. So much for that! Anyway, thanks for your help.

I feel your pain. I was in the same position (not at $600) and was ready to throw in the towel. I had e-mailed itunes with hopes of receiving actual tech support but received a generic reply of things to try, of which none worked. Shortly after I e-mailed them I did receive an automatic update (I just signed up and was using ver 6). I prod ceded with the update and I do not know if this had anything to do with my luck. I will search the 4318 error and see if there is anything listed as repairs

Hi,
I have version 6.0. I keep hoping the new versions will have a fix, but not yet. Thank you for trying to help. I read on the message board what you told Pui to do, so I did the iTunes repair and the got the gear CD drivers. I figured it was worth a try because nothing else was working. I have tried every brand of disc I can find and I have tried every burn speed, to no avail. Here's what came up when I ran the CD diagnostics:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Dell Computer Corporation Dimension 4600C
iTunes 6.0.1.3
CD Driver 2.0.4.3
CD Driver DLL 2.0.3.2
LowerFilters: PxHelp20 (2.0.0.0), Cdr4_xp (5.3.4.21),
UpperFilters: GEARAspiWDM (2.0.4.3), pwd_2k (5.3.5.16), Cdralw2k (5.3.4.21),
Video Driver: Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller\Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.

Current user is administrator.

Michelle,

4280 is not a driver error. It's an "Optical Power Calibration area error". So, let's try this.

Go the support site for your computer. Get the update labeled "Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility".

Did that drive come with the computer?

It's also true that you have a very old version of Roxio and a version of Sonic that has known problems with XP service pack 2. We could try that if the new ATA driver doesn't help.

Hi,
I went to the support site and got the update, then restarted my computer and opened iTunes and tried to burn a cd but the same error came up. Yes, this is the drive that came with the computer. I don't use the Roxio and now the windows media player isn't burning either. (My teen daughter uses it and downloads from Limewire.) Maybe it is my computer? But iTunes always worked fine until I upgraded. I ride horses & do hair for a living and I am not very skilled with computers, therefore I truly appreciate your help. Thank you!!

Michelle,

You're doing fine. This stuff is hard for anyone. Did CD burning with media player stop working right now when you updated the driver from the Dell site? Did it break when you updated iTunes? Did it break with a Window system update recently?

Ok, let's try an experiment. Let's try turning off the other two drivers for a moment to see if that's the problem.

On the start menu, click on "run". in the space it provides enter "regedit" without the quotes. This will open the registry editor.

Find the heading HKEY LOCALMACHINE. Click on it.
Find the heading SYSTEM inside it. Click on it.
Find the heading CurrentControlSet. Click
Find the heading Control. Click
Find the heading Class. Click
Find the heading that begins {4D36E965- Click

Select the lower filter key, right click, select "rename". Rename the key to "_LowerFilters".

Select the upper filter key, right click, select "modify". Select the contents of the text edit box and save that string somewhere in a text file in Notepad or something. You need to save it so that when you're done, you can get the upper filters back to their original state. Then edit the text in the dialog to just say "GEARAspiWDM" followed by a carriage return, the carriage return is important.

Then reboot, and see what iTunes and Windows Media Player do.

To get back to your previous state, go back into regedit and rename the lower filters key back to "LowerFilters" and modify the upper filters back to the text string that you saved in Notepad. Reboot.

Hi,
The media player stopped several months ago...it started with only burning part of the disc, now it won't burn anything. It all happened way before I updated iTunes so I don't think they have anything to do with each other. And I have Windows automatic update so I don't know if it coincides with any updates.
Now... I was doing fine with the directions until I got to the carriage return part. I copied and pasted the contents of the edit box in notepad. But I don't know what a carriage return is. I won't go any further until I hear back from you. Thanks again for your help.

Nov 2, 2005 6:59 PM in response to Michelle Mullen

Hah, sorry, Michelle, I'm revealing what an old broad I am. "Carriage return" is an old term from when you had a manual typewriter and pushed the carriage back to start a new line -- on your computer keyboard it will be the big key on the right that says "enter" or "return".

So, the drive stopped working in Windows Media Player a while back and just stopped working in iTunes with the new release? Ouch. I'm concerned that the drive may have just gone bad -- they're like hard drives, CD drives can fail too. You might have to go buy yourself a nice USB external drive and hook that up if all else fails.

Nov 2, 2005 7:12 PM in response to toonz

Hah!! I was just asking my son (20 yrs. old), what a carriage was. He didn't know. I told him I knew I used to use it on a type writer, so I must be as old as you are. Now we've both revealed we're old broads! Ok, I'll change the text in the dialog, then reboot and keep my fingers crossed. If it doesn't work, I will take your advice and get a new eternal drive.
Thank you for taking the time to help me. I really appreciate it.

I feel your pain! Have a relatively new Dell dimension 8400 and have never been able to burn from itunes. My son can burn to his ipod. I can use roxio or media player for non itunes songs and it works. Tried both the optical power calibration area fix and the CD diagnostic fix (even though Sony drive info was not the same) suggested in this topic and neither has helped, did upgrade to 6. Is there any hope?
