Stolen iPod touch

Hi. I just recently had an iPod touch stolen and as we all know that it cant be used without being plugged into a computer. I have the pin number from the box that I got it in. What I need to know is there anyway to track it using that and if not can the thief use it to buy more songs onto it from my credit card. Can you help?

Currently I would say, No. However, depending on where you are you might get some luck with local service agents, should the device ever turn up. This is unlikely if you are in the US, and more likely where I am: stolen computers have turned up.

That said, it would not be beyond the bounds of possibility to develop an app for this purpose. As well as the serial number appearing in iTunes there is also an "identifier" (click on the words, Serial Number). Some bright spark could produce something like Orbicule's Undercover for an iPod.

With all the information Apple has on products, with apps being written I would hope there will be a way to find iPhone, iTouch soon. I have read about people using a program on stolen laptop that takes a picture of the user and sends an email back to the owner. Very cool! Now if there were a email location app that could be installed that would be cool.
Future- hal are you listening?

Actually Apple could track and recover stolen ipods if they wanted to spend the money and develope the software. Dateline did a undercover story on this very thing:

Except they were using an iPod that allowed disk use.

They were able to install the tracking software by going into its folder on a computer and placing the software in it. When the person who stole it hooked it up to their computer, they didn't have a clue it had sent their information to the primary owner of the device, as it does this in the background.

The software is available from whostoleme.com, but the iPod has to have the ability to be used as a flash drive.

I would like to see Apple make this as an app available for the iPod Touch, but wouldn't it also conflict with some privacy laws?
