CANNOT listen voicemail via BLUETOOTH headset (w/ iPhone 3G)

With my iPhone v1, I was able to listen to my voicemail messages via bluetooth headset.

With my my iPhone 3G, I cannot.

Can anyone try and listen to your voicemail message via bluetooth headset?

(Could it be the firmware?)

Thanks.

My Jawbone can be selected and used when listening to voice mail - and both VoiceMail and my headset behave exactly as they did with the first iPhone version.

Check to make sure that you headset is properly paired and can be used when placing a phone call. From VoiceMail you should see the word "AUDIO" on a button in the top right hand corner of your screen. Clicking on the Audio button will reveal your audio sources and should include your Bluetooth Headset.

It saddens me to see users who are apparently, unfamiliar with their phones, attack Apple as harshly as they do. More than half of the posts on this board are about User Errors. How about we check issues out a little more closely before we bash - or at least bash lighter!

Yes, there are issues - as there are with most new releases. If you don't have the patience to wait out some of the fixes - perhaps buying early releases - isn't for you.

Same here. I was able to listen to messages on my old iPhone, but can't on the new one. I'm using a brand new Blue Ants Z9i. Really *****, I loved that feature. Now after I end call and go to check my voice mails that I received while on the call, I have to put down my headset and pick up the iPhone. That's the only time I ever actually put the iPhone to my face. Really lame Apple!!!!!

My two cents:

It absolutely depends on the headset.

I bought a Plantronics 520 (at the Apple Store!) for my new 3G. I got the "Speaker" button and was frustrated like everyone else.

I returned the Plantronics because it wasn't loud enough and got the
Jawbone (at the AT&T store). Now I have the "Audio" button and can listen
to voicemail through the headset.

In fact, if I turn on the phone with the headset off, the button goes
back to "Speaker." The moment I turn on the Jawbone and the phone detects
it, the button changes to "Audio."

I'm especially happy because I now have the Jawbone's "Noise Assassin"
technology. You can check it out here: http://us.jawbone.com/demo.aspx

There is a work around this problem that works perfect.
Using ur phone call ur self and thus u access message box via any Bluetooth headset. Shouldn't ask for password but if it does press "star". U can even set a short cut as an Icon on desktop that will call any number as was shown on utube under iPhone dialing shortcuts I think.

Be careful about berating other users without knowing what they are experiencing. I AM familiar with my phone, my bluetooth headset IS paired properly and the "AUDIO" button you refer to is marked only "SPEAKER" regardless of the status of my bluetooth headset.

According to this article, the change was intentional (boo!):

Apple wasn’t really satisfied with the user experience of having to go to Voicemail and then tap on a button to set the output source to the Bluetooth headset—and was especially worried that it might be dangerous while driving.

Hmm ... but it's OK to require dialing via key presses while driving -- vs. providing voice dialing in the iPhone.

Their consumer research must be done by their tech "geniuses" 🙂

It's now a law in Los Angeles that you cannot talk/listen on a cell phone while driving without a hands free device. Thanks Apple.

Can't listen to voicemail w/ bluetooth as well. Only option on the the top right button is the speaker.

As for the workaround, it may work, but it's silly to have to do that. Another thanks, Apple.

Does anyone know when Apple will rectify this potentially fine receiving problem?

Just got a new 3G and tried my old Jabra BT500 headset: same issue as everyone else, no visual VM access. Genius said i needed to upgrade my headset and I now have brand new Z9iAnt with same issue. I tried a Jawbone in the ATT store and am 100% sure it's compatible with visual VM. what is everyone's consensus? Should i wait for a firmware fix or exchange the brand new Z9iAnt? (trouble is that the the Z9i seems so superior to the Jawbone in terms of ergonomics, fit and ease of use).

Feedback?

I didn't. Or I didn't need to. It has been documented or reported in many forums, technews and even on Apple's own headset "Store." (Reviewed by many who complained about this, check out the reviews on Plantronics 925 at the Apple on-line store).

*Even those who own the ORIGINAL iPhone v1 and upgraded there firmware to 2.0 have the same reported problem. Think about those who have v1 iphone, they are furious about this.

Many others included myself have sent this reported problem to Apple. Surely they will fix it on the next firmware.

The techs don't know any of that!!!! That is standard call center speak.

Apple doesn't tell anyone, including ATT, what they will and what they will not include in future updates. There is no Tech anywhere, Apple or ATT who knows what future updates may or may not include. The techs find out at the same time you find out, when it is added.

I wouldn't hold my breath for any kind of change to things that have already been out for more than a year and Apple has chosen not to change.

Those Techs who DO release any kind of insider information are subject to being fired by Apple. ATT reps can say whatever they want, but would be the last to know of any changes.

Of course, we would all like these types of changes, but you absolutely can not believe anything a Tech tells you they think will be in the next update. They do not know.
