iPhone 3G won't display own number

I have upgraded from the iPhone to the new iPhone 3G. My old iPhone would always display my own number at the top of the contacts page. This doesn't appear on my new iPhone 3G. I have taken the SIM out of the phone and put it into another to check if my own number is set ok on the sim card and it looks fine. Any way of getting this working?

can somebody explains to me why they want their number that bad in "Contacts"??
can't u memorise it??

Some of us have multiple mobile numbers (for use in different countries where we work), and we would like to dedicate our energy to other matters than memorising all of them and in different languages at that.

After all, this was why I paid 100€ to Orange/France to legally unlock my iPhone, to have all my contacts & calendars at hand, instead of taking multiple handsets with me whenever travelling.

My memory is like a sieve and a few times I get people asking for my mobile number and though I can remember a some of the numbers I fail to be accurate, either I can't complete the numbers or I get the odd one mixed up such as 05 instead of 50.

MY mobile number is in the, 'phone, contacts at the top. Settings/phone and iTunes summary tab and I'm on o2 carrier.
To me, getting into senior years it's a god send.

At this point in reading this thread, I can't see my number anywhere either. O2.ie

Anyone resolve this yet?

Like someone else suggested earlier in this thread--if you have another phone lying around that allows you to add/edit the phone number identified with the SIM card, you can just go that route. In my case, I inserted my iPhone SIM into my Motorola RAZR in order to add my phone number so that it'll show up at the top of the Contacts list on my iPhone.

I had this same problem, went to Apple Store twice, AT&T twice, even ended up with a brand new phone from Apple because they couldn't figure out how to fix the problem. I followed the instructions here and put the SIM card from my iPhone into an old RAZR I had lying around, edited the phone number, and voila ... problem solved. Thanks VERY much; this was driving me nuts. I too am apparently one step away from the nursing home because sometimes I have a hard time remembering my phone #, so this actually was really important to me.

There may be a misunderstanding here. Perhaps some are getting confused by the use of similar terminology and the iPhone applications.

1. While in the main "home" window, tap the green phone icon. Then tap the contacts icon on the bottom of the next screen that appears. Scroll to the top of the window all the way to the "A" contacts. Your number will then appear at the top of that page just above the "search" window.

2. Your own phone number will not appear in the contacts window of the Address book application.

I tried to follow these directions, but after contacting AT&T (via online chat - since the phone support had 10 minute waits), they "determined"
that my phone was making calls, and sending its caller-id, so I needed to
call apple support instead (800) 694-7466. After 20-plus minutes on hold - (hope this isn't normal - since iPhone os 2.1 came out yesterday) the Apple tech had me to a complete reset (that didn't fix anything) that I'm still recovering from.
When all that didn't help, he said - (guess what) - we need to get AT&T to fix this 😟. At least apple stayed on the line while we conference in, and the AT&T technician did the following steps:

1) OTA (over the air) activation
2) IRDB profile IMS
3) power cycle the iPhone

Now I have "My Number" displaying both in Settings -> Phone, and in Phone -> Contacts (top of list)
