So, every time I plug in my iPhone to sync, the first thing it wants to do is some sort of MASSIVE backup procedure that takes anywhere from 30 mins to 2+ hours if I let it complete. Whats the deal here?
Right now I only have about 500MB of stuff on the phone (no movies, songs, photos, etc. Only contacts, email, and the calendar) and its taking about 35 minutes EVERY TIME!
I have and use Time Machine and LOVE it. This is rediculous though. It never used to do this with my old iPhone. It only started with iPhone 2.0 software.
This has to be a bug, every time I sync my iPhone it does a backup which takes about 20 minutes (I haven't actually timed it, but it takes a loooong time)
I have let it complete once to see if it would do it again, and it did.
I even renamed the backup folder and let iTunes create a brand new one, same problem. I hope Apple will fix this really soon, it's extremely annoying...
I have 2.3 GB of data (music, contacts and apps) on my iPod Touch 16 GB. iTunes spent more than 3 hours to backup, although I have changed only a few contact data between two syncs.
Mine does that also. It never happened with the old phone. "Backup" takes 10-15 minutes every time I synch. No change after a "restore" and update to 4A347. It's annoying that a synch should take so long.
Ditto. I am getting 3 + hours to do a simple sync due to the backup. Does Apple monitor these threads? I am also on the "iPhone camera cant store photos thread". My ability to not take photos has followed from my old iPhone to my new 3G. I hope someone is working on these issues!
I agree. There is something fundamentally wrong with this backup software. First, I believe it is doing a FULL backup when it should be doing an incremental backup. Take 1 FULL backup and then only changes to the IPhone when they occur.
As I speak, I am going on 5 hours for the backup. I admit I only have about 1/2 gig left after programs and music and podcasts r on the phone. But Gee wiz, 5 hours????????
We should at least have the ability to by-pass the backup.
Hey Apple, u DO realize that this is a phone, right? We need to USE the phone. We can't ahve it tied up for 5 hours every time I want to get some podcasts or download a program!
My 3G iPhone was just fine as far as speed goes with syncing/backing up until this evening. Not only did it take forever to backup, it synced itself 5 times or so during the backup-except it never managed to transfer the newly downloaded applications over to the iPhone. Lovely.
And I think these forums are giving it competition as far as "slow" goes since it took me ten minutes to be able to get to the point where I could write this comment. La. Annoying on two levels.
The problem is with iTunes 7.7. (Which I pretty much figured because both my 1st gen iPhone and my new 3G both had this problem after I updated iTunes.)
It's not that the back ups are large, it's that the data gets sent from the iPhone to the computer at just a couple kbs per second.
Apple is supposedly aware and will hopefully be addressing it soon.

"Backup" is *EXTREMELY* slow (iPhone 3G)...
