I'm not sure quite what I'm checking, but I'll give you a rundown:

The iTunes/iPod files are coming directly off the CD.

The ISScript files were originally saved to E:/itsetup but then when I ran it they seem to have copied to c:/program files/common files/InstallShield.

Although I'm noticing that c:/program files/common files/InstallShield/Driver only contains a folder called 7, whereas I thought I'd just installed 8. Is this relevant?

Thanks,

Ben

hi benlish!

hmmm. some information gathering questions this time.

which drive is your OS installed on? the C drive or the E drive?

how about itunes? which drive have you been installing that one on?

what is your D drive? is it a CD drive?

OS is on the C Drive.

I had a previous version of iTunes on my C Drive, but I removed it and did the cleanup as recommended.

Given a choice I would put the next version on my E drive, but I won't be too fussy.

The computer is a work computer, so the C drive has to synchronise with my work network, whereas E is standalone.

(I'm logged on as Administrator and have full privileges.)

D drive is a CD drive.

Hope this helps

Ben

hmmm. i've seen some strange things reported when itunes is installed on machines while VPNs were running, and i've seen some strange things reported when it's installed on a different drive than the OS.

can we try one more time, downloading a copy of the installer to the C drive and then running the install from there and to there?

if that fails again, let's try getting an install log on the error to the Apple Engineers. follow the instructions in this toonz post:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1304835&#1304835

(best probably to say that b noir sent you.)

keep us posted.

Hi b,

Thanks for all your help so far. Things are getting worse, I'm afraid...

I downloaded iTunesSetUp to the C drive, installed ISScript8 on the C drive, and then ran iTunesSetUp, but got the same old 1608 error.

So I went to the page you recommended, and tried to send a log, except the file C:\log.txt was never produced (I've tried it twice, and there's nothing new in my root directory.)

Any thoughts?

Ben

adam,

Let me work the problem from a slightly different angle because it looks like you've gone through the standard tricks with b noir for making sure you have the right version of the InstallShield stuff.

But I've also seen this error when for some reason InstallShield is running in the background, even if you've rebooted. One of the tricks to make sure you don't have a rogue copy of InstallShield running is to download, install, and run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301

Sometimes when you run that utility, it will tell you that an installation is running, do you want to stop it -- and the answer is of course yes.

So, try that. Then delete the contents of your temp folder which is usually,

C:\Documents and Setting\<username>\Local Settings\Temp

Don't worry if you can't delete everything because some files will be in use by the browser and whatnot, just delete what you can.

Then download and run the installer again -- but we're going to run it in logging mode so that when it fails, you'll have a file to send off to the Apple engineers. To run it in this logging mode:

1. Start menu -> Run... In the text field of the dialog that comes up, type in "cmd" and hit return.

2. In the command prompt dialog that comes up, find the iTunesSetup.exe installer on your desktop and drag it to this window. Then on the same line type in a space and then the following:

/Verbose"c:\log.txt"
There is no space between the e in Verbose and the double quote (").

4. Hit return.

5. The installer will create a log file:

C:\log.txt

If the install doesn't work this time, find that file and send them to the apple moderator. Tell her Toonz sent you. It doesn't hurt to put the URL to this discussion thread, so that whoever gets it has some context.

Well the fact you didn't get a log file means that you're not actually getting to any iTunes specific installer code. You're bombing out in the launching of InstallShield.

You have XP, what service pack do you have on XP? Do you have all the latest updates from Microsoft from the Windows Update page?

Dec 15, 2005 9:40 AM in response to toonz

I'm using Windows XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 2

I have all the high priority updates. The custom updates which I don't have are listed at the bottom of this message, but none of them look particularly relevant to me.

I don't know if this is important, but I do get the "What language" box when I try to install (before the crash) which I would have thought was part of the iTunes specific installer code. No?

Anyway, thanks so much for all your help (and b noir's) so far - hope we get somewhere soon!

Ben

... back again ...

When I install the ISScript and Installshield stuff, it only takes about two seconds, so I'm slightly worried it's not actually doing what it ought to. Any thoughts?

let's try running with that idea. it's conceivable that something is interfering with the InstallShield engine install ... so let's try applying the following technique to the engine install:

Modify the System Configurations on Your Windows XP Computer

does the engine install proceed in a more sedate manner after that?
