Hi, I just got a 3G with Fido in Canada and wondering if it's possible to turn off the use of data by the cellular network, but I still wanna use wi-fi. So far I don't need to use data and don't wanna be over charged by accident if I do a mistake and use the data on the 3G network. Thanks.
I'm no expert but although you're using the 2.0 firmware that doesn't mean there are no software differences between the original iPhone and iPhone 3G. If I go to In the iPhone 3G under Settings - General - Network there are only the following options:
- enable/disable 3G;
- enable/disable Data Roaming;
- VPN configuration;
- Wi-Fi configuration;
At first I thought "enable/disable 3G" would enable/disable all data tranfer through the Cellular Network, but it doesn't... as the name of the option indicates it only controls 3G, EDGE/GPRS are allways on. Probably Apple only implemented the option to enable/disable 3G for battery management purposes...
Apple didn't think that people would use the iPhone without a generous Data Plan or with absurdly expensive ones... or, if you like conspiracy theories, Apple ignored this option on purpose to make people spend more money.
This may help: Just put wrong apn, username, password in the Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network
This how i do:
apn: apn
Username: username
Password: password
basically just put rubbish in all the field. I do not suggest to leave them blank. I think it will use the previous settings if u leave them blank.
This works for me!! Try it and let me know!! Thank You.
I've got an iPhone 3G and my wife has an original iPhone, both on 2.0.
On the original iPhone there are no Cellular Dta Network settings but on the 3G there are - the opposite to Gadgetman and Ricardo's iPhones.
My wife has just been charged AU$1100 for data usage, even though she never uses anything except mail and even then, only at home on wi-fi. I'd love to be able to stuff up the APN settings but I can't access them on her iPhone!?
When I was using her phone before I upgraded I never used even a tenth as much data, and I thought I was using it all the time.
