Success! All fixes together in one thread...step-by-step...

Okay, after one and a half days of bad installs, error messages, and reading this board I've FINALLY gotten v5.0 to work on my XP system. How'd I do it? Well, I took ALL the fixes offered on this site and did them all at once. Here's what I did...step-by-step with instructions. By the way, I'm running a Dell Inspiron 2200 with Windows XP Home.

1.) Make sure you have the file "mapi32.dll" version 1.0.2536 in your /windows/system32 folder.
How do I check:
Click on you Start Menu in the lower left
Then click on "My Computer"
Then click on the "Windows" folder
Then click on the "system32" folder
Scroll to the "m"'s and put your mouse pointer over the "mapi32.dll" file, the version should pop up.
If you don't have this file there are some creative ways to get the file that people have posted on this support forum. Look into those ways.

2.) Make sure ALL of the following are "started": TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, Windows Management Instrument, and WMI Performance Adapter.
How do I do this:
Click on the Start Menu
Move your mouse pointer to "My Computer", but don't click on it
RIGHT-click on "My Computer" and then choose "manage" in that menu
In the left hand panel double-click "Services and Applications", then double click "services" in the right panel.
Find those three files in the windows and click on them and make sure it says "Started" and "Automatic" next to the names.

3.) Download and install the stand alone Quicktime 7.0.2 player. You need this for iTunes to run. Here's the link:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
Restart your computer.

4.) Download Bonjour for Windows from this link:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows_readme.html
NOTE: Before you start the install do the following(VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND SPYWARE SOFTWARE. If you're running Norton 2005 right click on the system tray icon and click "disable Norton internet security" and "disable antivirus auto protect" make sure you do it until at least the "next system startup". I was also running Avast Antivirus so I had to "stop on-access protection". Those were the ones on my system, your system may be different.
Then run the Bonjour install and restart your computer.

4.) Download the iTunes install program from here:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/
ONCE AGAIN (VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND ANTISPYWARE AS YOU DID FOR THE PREVIOUS STEP!!!!
Restart your computer when it's done.

This should work. For me, all the songs and playlists updated except for like 4 songs which said they couldn't be found. But when it asked if I would like to find the file I clicked "yes" and it lead me directly to the folder that had the song in it and when I clicked on the file the song started to play. I now had v5.0
I really hope this helps.

Oh, almost forgot. For those of you that have been having problems after you tried to install v5.0 before you start all that stuff above you HAVE to remove ALL the old iTunes crap off your computer. What I did was went into add/remove files and removed Quicktime and iTunes and Bonjour if it was there. Then I went into the "My Computer" folder, and "Program Files" and manually deleted all the iTunes, Bonjour, and Quicktime fodlers. Then I ran "Windows Install Clean Up" to get rid of the rest of the iTunes, Bonjour, and Quicktime garbage. There are some nice threads on here on how to remove this stuff from your system if I didn't cover it all, which is possible. Remember to do this before you start the steps above.

Also, in step 2.) if those files are not started then click on "start" to make them work.

hi Phil!

tried installing QT7 and I get 1603 error "Unable to install IstallShield Scripting"

b let's be very careful here.

the error message you are citing is associated with
b a 1607, not a 1603.
the treatments for the 1607 and the 1603 differ.

if you're getting a chain of errors (for example, a 1607 followed by a 1603), then you need to treat the first error in the chain.

here's some advice on the 1607 (and excellent general advice for a lot of installer errors):

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976

b if the first error message number in your chain is different from any cited error in this document,
please post back to advise us what you're getting. we have treatments available for a number of those.

love, b

After several wasted hours trying to get v5 to function without disabling my wireless net and my broadband connection (yes, I had printed out the wise words from this forum and followed them step by step), I decided enough was enough and stepped back to 4.8 - it works!

The only loss was all my playlists! Should take all that long to reassemble them from the 676 individual tracks...<sigh>

I learned a lesson today - don't be an early adopter of so-called 'improvements'. Personally I shall await a future update that works and doesn't require days of effort to get close to acceptable operation.

So far, I have done all the steps listed above. I looked into the Windows Installer Cleanup and saw no Itunes, Quicktime, or Bonjour installs in that listing. I proceeded to do all the steps above, up to installing Bonjour. I made sure my McAfee antivirus and my Windows Anti-spy ware software was diabled during the Bonjour download and installation, but I continue getting the same 1920 error. Is there anything else I can try?

Great instructions and iTunes installed with only one heart stopping moment when the XP error report window opened followed by the Microsoft Online Crash Analysis window that announced that I'd suffered a major hardware failure.
I don't think so.
What I did notice is that XP hung at the Welcome screen(I don't get the Welcome screen since this is a one person computer.)and then again after the desktop loaded but before the icons appeared (Something else it never does.).
The cause was the installer for this version of iTunes which definitly has problems.
iTunes is running fine now and everything updated correctly but I'm still ticked off about nearly being given heart failure.
Oh yes, it's easier to get rid of iTunes and QuickTime registry entries if you have Regcleaner : http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm
Quicktime especially leaves files scattered everywhere.

I have had no such luck with the fix. This all started when I responded to the email from Apple telling me that there was an update to iTunes. I downloaded the update and have not been able to access iTunes since. I rolled back to the beginning of August and I have received messages telling me that I am missing iTunes files and to reinstall. I reintalled with my original CD and still no iTunes. I followed this fix and still no iTunes.

I checked TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, Windows Management Instrument, and WMI Performance Adapter and the only change I had to make was to WMI. I then uninstalled both iTunes 4.8 and whatever version of Quicktime was installed. I restarted my computer and followed the directions with no success. Right now I am contemplating taking my computer and Ipods to the Apple store tomorrow.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the kind words, but I'm definitely not a genius. I just kinda put everything together, but obviously it's still not enough for some people. I don't know enough about the inner workings of computers to help much more. I really hope that Apple comes out with a fix because this type of engineering is completely unacceptable for a company such as this. My advice for those of you that this didn't work for is to try to reinstall 4.7.1(if you can) and wait until a working version is put out.

I have tried everything in this post except for the mapi32.dll all to no avail. For whatever reason I do not have a mapi32.dll file on my pc (am running Windows XP Home on a Dell 4550) and don't feel comfortable loading something that I didn't need before unless someone from Apple tells me it is an absolute prerequisite. I have uninstalled and re-installed over a dozen times each time trying something a little different (e.g. disabling Norton 5, disabling Zonealarms, uninstalling and doing disk cleanup, uninstalling and deleting temp directory, uninstalling and deleting all old Bonjour, Quicktime and itunes folders, uninstalling itunes, Bonjour, Quicktime and older versions of ipod updater, etc) all to no avail. I just downloaded an older version of itunes and it installed and works like a charm. Is there a fix coming soon? Question: Where does itunes keep its playlists. Thankfully I haven't lost any music, but my old playlists are gone. Please HELP!
