Success! All fixes together in one thread...step-by-step...

Okay, after one and a half days of bad installs, error messages, and reading this board I've FINALLY gotten v5.0 to work on my XP system. How'd I do it? Well, I took ALL the fixes offered on this site and did them all at once. Here's what I did...step-by-step with instructions. By the way, I'm running a Dell Inspiron 2200 with Windows XP Home.

1.) Make sure you have the file "mapi32.dll" version 1.0.2536 in your /windows/system32 folder.
How do I check:
Click on you Start Menu in the lower left
Then click on "My Computer"
Then click on the "Windows" folder
Then click on the "system32" folder
Scroll to the "m"'s and put your mouse pointer over the "mapi32.dll" file, the version should pop up.
If you don't have this file there are some creative ways to get the file that people have posted on this support forum. Look into those ways.

2.) Make sure ALL of the following are "started": TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, Windows Management Instrument, and WMI Performance Adapter.
How do I do this:
Click on the Start Menu
Move your mouse pointer to "My Computer", but don't click on it
RIGHT-click on "My Computer" and then choose "manage" in that menu
In the left hand panel double-click "Services and Applications", then double click "services" in the right panel.
Find those three files in the windows and click on them and make sure it says "Started" and "Automatic" next to the names.

3.) Download and install the stand alone Quicktime 7.0.2 player. You need this for iTunes to run. Here's the link:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
Restart your computer.

4.) Download Bonjour for Windows from this link:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows_readme.html
NOTE: Before you start the install do the following(VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND SPYWARE SOFTWARE. If you're running Norton 2005 right click on the system tray icon and click "disable Norton internet security" and "disable antivirus auto protect" make sure you do it until at least the "next system startup". I was also running Avast Antivirus so I had to "stop on-access protection". Those were the ones on my system, your system may be different.
Then run the Bonjour install and restart your computer.

4.) Download the iTunes install program from here:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/
ONCE AGAIN (VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND ANTISPYWARE AS YOU DID FOR THE PREVIOUS STEP!!!!
Restart your computer when it's done.

This should work. For me, all the songs and playlists updated except for like 4 songs which said they couldn't be found. But when it asked if I would like to find the file I clicked "yes" and it lead me directly to the folder that had the song in it and when I clicked on the file the song started to play. I now had v5.0
I really hope this helps.

b that's

Hi noir
Thank's for your replay!Now i re-post the problem.

Note:My computer continuously runs directx9.0b, when that iTunes can normally run. Day before yesterday in order to play the game, downloaded the directx9.0c installment, finally in the directx9.0c could't installed in winnt/system32, iTunes also had not been able to run.

hi Paul!

error code 0x80040707

head to our "research thread" on error code 0x80040707:

... to use the thread to troubleshoot, go to the case studies and fixes in messages 3, 3.x and 4. try to adapt the information in the case studies to your situation. most of the case studies are for itunes rather than QT, but the same basic techniques will tend to work for both (and other packages too).

if the problem persists, start a new thread of your own outlining your problem and what you've already tried. (use the "post a new topic" link.) we need to get you out in the open where other people can see you.

Running Windows XP SP2

Ok...I tried this solution (for v4.9.0.17) and I still got the service manager error. I then attempted about 20 times to end the process at the 'Publishing' point with no success. Then I discovered this...

At the Service Manager error, leave the error on screen DO NOT click OK!

Load Task Manager and leave it open.

At this stage the failed install hasn't rolled back the iTunes install yet and you should still be able to see the iTunes icon on your desktop.

Double click the icon and respond to the various prompts. iTunes will load and start converting music on your computer.

Go back to Task Manager window, end the three main processes, I think they're - itunessetup.exe, msiexec and idriver. Then end the itunes install under the task manager's application tab (it may have ended anyway).

iTunes WORKED!!! After two days of trying including version 6 which I've now given up on. I haven't tried connecting the ipod yet as my music is still converting but I'm hoping all will be well. I'll update this post if there are any issues.

Hope this helps some people, apologies if the process names are not exact but I'm typing this from memory after the event.

Good luck!!

iTunes WORKED!!!

well done, David!

you've actually reinvented A's delayed install trick:

keep an eye on your system. the workarounds we used for this cluster of problems (=0, vanishing installation, etc) typically don't necessarily fix them. here's some documentation:

Aaaaarrrrgh...after converting all my music I connected my ipod, my laptop found it ok (appeared as a drive) but it didn't appear under Source in itunes. Ok, I thought, I'll exit iTunes and launch it again. Guess what? The icon disappeared from my desktop, looks like its completed the uninstall that I thought I had got round previously! I think I'll throw the towel in...I'm so over it. Just to rub salt in the wound now my laptop won't boot, it sits on the manufacturer (Dell) splash screen at the loading BIOS point. Looks like I'll have to go to safe mode and go back to the last system restore point.

Ok...obviously I have the patience of a saint! Tried again, same process as I mentioned before but this time I ended all the msiexec processes first, then idriver and any other itunes related processes THEN I ended the itunes install application. I also copied the itunes and ipod folders beforehand just in case (not needed). Now works and I can close and reopen itunes fine.
Sorry for the fragmented instructions but I'm basically updating you 'live'! I think the problem previously was that I had three msiexec process running and I couldn't kill one of them due to 'access denied'. No such problem on the successful attempt.
