Success! All fixes together in one thread...step-by-step...

Okay, after one and a half days of bad installs, error messages, and reading this board I've FINALLY gotten v5.0 to work on my XP system. How'd I do it? Well, I took ALL the fixes offered on this site and did them all at once. Here's what I did...step-by-step with instructions. By the way, I'm running a Dell Inspiron 2200 with Windows XP Home.

1.) Make sure you have the file "mapi32.dll" version 1.0.2536 in your /windows/system32 folder.
How do I check:
Click on you Start Menu in the lower left
Then click on "My Computer"
Then click on the "Windows" folder
Then click on the "system32" folder
Scroll to the "m"'s and put your mouse pointer over the "mapi32.dll" file, the version should pop up.
If you don't have this file there are some creative ways to get the file that people have posted on this support forum. Look into those ways.

2.) Make sure ALL of the following are "started": TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, Windows Management Instrument, and WMI Performance Adapter.
How do I do this:
Click on the Start Menu
Move your mouse pointer to "My Computer", but don't click on it
RIGHT-click on "My Computer" and then choose "manage" in that menu
In the left hand panel double-click "Services and Applications", then double click "services" in the right panel.
Find those three files in the windows and click on them and make sure it says "Started" and "Automatic" next to the names.

3.) Download and install the stand alone Quicktime 7.0.2 player. You need this for iTunes to run. Here's the link:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
Restart your computer.

4.) Download Bonjour for Windows from this link:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows_readme.html
NOTE: Before you start the install do the following(VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND SPYWARE SOFTWARE. If you're running Norton 2005 right click on the system tray icon and click "disable Norton internet security" and "disable antivirus auto protect" make sure you do it until at least the "next system startup". I was also running Avast Antivirus so I had to "stop on-access protection". Those were the ones on my system, your system may be different.
Then run the Bonjour install and restart your computer.

4.) Download the iTunes install program from here:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/
ONCE AGAIN (VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND ANTISPYWARE AS YOU DID FOR THE PREVIOUS STEP!!!!
Restart your computer when it's done.

This should work. For me, all the songs and playlists updated except for like 4 songs which said they couldn't be found. But when it asked if I would like to find the file I clicked "yes" and it lead me directly to the folder that had the song in it and when I clicked on the file the song started to play. I now had v5.0
I really hope this helps.

I used Dmitry's fixes and got iTunes 5.0 installed after 8 hours of failed attempts--but now have another problem. On Windows boot-up, the popup you get when you right-click mouse is flickering, with the cursor constantly scrolling through choices. No desktop shortcuts will work. Finally figured out that pulling my USB cable (to my HP Multifunction printer/fax) will allow laptop to run. This only happened AFTER iTunes upgrade to 5.0. Why? Any thoughts out there?

hi Greg!

hmmmm. try running your XP "input devices" troubleshooter to see if that shows up anything. (probably best to have the printer plugged in at the time ... that particular troubleshooter segues into the hardware troubleshooter, and you'll probably need to print out instructions at some stage.)

it would also be prudent to head to the hp website to see if they have any relevant troubleshooting advice or updates available for that make of printer.

keep us posted on your progress.

Hi, I'm new to this.....never had any problems till now except my dumb ipod keeps freezing. But with this upgrade I used the above fix and I can open itunes now but none of my music plays any sound. I tried clicking on the music in itunes, then from my music folder and neither worked. The hash mark at the top doesn't move either so the music itself isn't playing at all. if anyone could give me some advice on how to fix this problem - I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Ming06

StarDeb will probably be along to give you some advice soon. in the meantime, here's my latest "information pack" on the issue:

hi Ming! (you can change your alias to "Ming" if you like ... see the preferences link off to the right of your screen.)

Thanks b, I can at least download music to my ipod,

certainly not an ideal situation for you, though.

we'd better get you reposted in a place where the right people can see you properly. (you're pretty much buried out of sight in this thread. very few people visit here regularly, too.)

try adding a post to this thread, which is focussed on the "no sound" issues:

Hey everyone,
Thanks for all the nice posts. I'm glad my thread actually helped some people and thanks to b noir and the others that filled in the stuff that I just didn't know. I love Apple and have a Mac desktop, but this version of iTunes was unacceptable, people that don't know about computers should not have to fix issues like this. Hopefully the 5.0.1 solves some of these problems. This board is a lifesaver, I'm really happy it's here.

Thanks so much!!! After trying everything in just about every newsgroup in here, I had no luck getting iTunes to work. But, after following your steps, it worked. As far as I can tell, the basic difference was the seperate install of Bonjour, as I did the Norton disabling all along following the other instructions. So, gratz to you, hope this works out good for other folks too!

All of this just to get news talk radio feeds while I play games on my "real" computer, and I like iTunes better than Windows Media Player!
