Success! All fixes together in one thread...step-by-step...

Okay, after one and a half days of bad installs, error messages, and reading this board I've FINALLY gotten v5.0 to work on my XP system. How'd I do it? Well, I took ALL the fixes offered on this site and did them all at once. Here's what I did...step-by-step with instructions. By the way, I'm running a Dell Inspiron 2200 with Windows XP Home.

1.) Make sure you have the file "mapi32.dll" version 1.0.2536 in your /windows/system32 folder.
How do I check:
Click on you Start Menu in the lower left
Then click on "My Computer"
Then click on the "Windows" folder
Then click on the "system32" folder
Scroll to the "m"'s and put your mouse pointer over the "mapi32.dll" file, the version should pop up.
If you don't have this file there are some creative ways to get the file that people have posted on this support forum. Look into those ways.

2.) Make sure ALL of the following are "started": TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, Windows Management Instrument, and WMI Performance Adapter.
How do I do this:
Click on the Start Menu
Move your mouse pointer to "My Computer", but don't click on it
RIGHT-click on "My Computer" and then choose "manage" in that menu
In the left hand panel double-click "Services and Applications", then double click "services" in the right panel.
Find those three files in the windows and click on them and make sure it says "Started" and "Automatic" next to the names.

3.) Download and install the stand alone Quicktime 7.0.2 player. You need this for iTunes to run. Here's the link:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
Restart your computer.

4.) Download Bonjour for Windows from this link:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bonjourforwindows_readme.html
NOTE: Before you start the install do the following(VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND SPYWARE SOFTWARE. If you're running Norton 2005 right click on the system tray icon and click "disable Norton internet security" and "disable antivirus auto protect" make sure you do it until at least the "next system startup". I was also running Avast Antivirus so I had to "stop on-access protection". Those were the ones on my system, your system may be different.
Then run the Bonjour install and restart your computer.

4.) Download the iTunes install program from here:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/
ONCE AGAIN (VERY IMPORTANT) DISABLE ALL YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND ANTISPYWARE AS YOU DID FOR THE PREVIOUS STEP!!!!
Restart your computer when it's done.

This should work. For me, all the songs and playlists updated except for like 4 songs which said they couldn't be found. But when it asked if I would like to find the file I clicked "yes" and it lead me directly to the folder that had the song in it and when I clicked on the file the song started to play. I now had v5.0
I really hope this helps.

hi b!

I did post in the other forum, but no response. i managed to get my library back, only thing i lost was ratings, album art was even there. but, my ipod itself still has ghosted playlists that i can't edit, delete or anything. i do notice a padlock icon at the bottom of the itunes screen when i select these playlists--could that be it? how do i get rid of it?

not really sure about that, i'm afraid. maybe try refreshing your thread over at the other forum with another post? if activity over there is as busy as it is here, your post might just have gotten buried before anyone with knowledge about this could spot it.

soory i couldn't be more help to you on this one.

love, b

I also received an error while trying to install iTunes 4.9:
"Error connecting to Service Manager, Error number = 0"

Variables:
iPod Photo 60Gb w/June Patch
Windows XP SP2
Patches up-to-date
Office XP Pro
Tried iTunes 4.9, and 5.0

After troubleshooting, I found out these various things:

While trying to install 4.9, just at the end of the install, this error came up, and if you click OK, it uninstalls iTunes and leaves Quicktime 6.5. If you END TASK on the application without clicking OK, (The apps are: msiexec.exe(first), IDriver.exe, iTunesInstaller.exe, etc) it will leave the partially installed iTunes in place, and will work fine.

When attempting to install iTunes 5.0, while it's installing, when it hit the 'Publishing product' state of the Installshield Wizard, the application auto-terminates, and proceeds to uninstall the QT7 and botched iTunes5 install. If you END TASK on the msiexec.exe (first), iDriver.exe, and the iTunesInstaller.exe, when it just hits the 'Publishing' phase it will leave the partially installed iTunes 5.0 installed on your machine. At this point, if you were to download and install the standalone version of QuickTime7, iTunes will then operate as expected.

This END TASK trick is hit or miss for v5 iTunes in regards to timing of the termination of the app, but on 4.9, it's recreatable, and constant.

I have experienced no ill after-effects from this 'suspended install' method.

Best of luck to all.

I am sure that your solution will definitely help with my problem, but for now I have some questions about it...

Step One: In my system32 folder I have mapi32.dll version 1.0.2536 .0. Is the extra .0 on the end a problem?

Step Two: I am able to start all those services easily.

Step Three: I installed the stand alone player, but when i try to open it it says "Quicktime failed to initialize: Error 63441". Is this a problem?

I have to restart, I'll finish this post after I restart.
