This is so annoying.. OpenVPN is the only VPN that actually works consistantly in China. Without having OpenVPN I can not have a reliable internet connection and have everything just work.
I know 100 other people here who would be using the feature if it was allowed. We are all suffering because of the same issue.
Did you know foreign app stores in China do not work properly without a VPN? The only way i can get it to work properly is get my phone to connect to my router which has OpenVPN setup on it to get my app updates. So frustrating.
PLEASE APPLE - OPEN THE API... LET US USE OPENVPN
I also want this, badly!
OpenVPN FTW!
+1. This would be sooooooo useful!!!
Pretty please, Apple?

I moved on. No need for this anymore.
+1 for need openvpn on my iPad! Is there any hope for this?
Uhhhh, that is extremely old news, not hope. Requires a jail break, which many people can't or won't do.
I heard Wozniak said today that Android was better than the iPhone at many things. Obviously, this is one of them. Get a grip, Apple.
I don't understand why the L2TP tab on the VPN config built into iOS 4+ won't do it. (Only the IPSec tab is branded Cisco which is because Apple licensed their code, presumably, to roll it into OS X / iOS — even that should not matter for IPSec servers).
Simply because L2TP is not OpenVPN. Lots of companies start to use OpenVPN as it has quite a lot advantages over the other VPN protocols.

The biggest advantage is speed (no double encryption). Thanks for the link which outlines the tech nicely. I have to wonder if Apple's huge desire to penetrate the Chinese market has them blocking OVPN because of its fantastic ability to run on one port which circumvents The Great Firewall.
I doubt that at all... since the others also work with a single port. Although the others do not require certificates to be installed as files; which is most likely the hardship of this on ios. That being said... I wouldn't hold your breath on this happening. Some of us tried years ago. I've moved on to other encryption, and it's fine. The main advantage of openvpn previous wasn't encryption or anything like that-- it was cost. But now that even ipsec is available on open source deployments, the cost factor is moot.
Can you point me (us) in the right direction of choosing an open ipsec vpn server; for linux (fedora core)? Not exactly consumer reports for this kind of thing..
freeswan, openswan, etc. for fedora. Or look for something like pfsense.
Thanks will look into it.
Check out Endian Firewall. It has a lot more to offer than *just* OpenVPN, but it will do the trick. You can also simply try it with their live CD.
