battery life with 2.0 update

I didn't see a thread on this yet - but then again I could have missed it in the near endless number of 2.0 problem threads.

anyway - ever since I upgraded to 2.0 my battery life has been horrible! My battery used to last a good day and a half or so, and with the new firmware update I can hardly keep a charge more than a few hours before I start getting the 10% battery life warning. I plug my phone in at the same time every night and have never had any problems with battery, but with 2.0 I plug my phone in at night and it dies on me halfway through the next day! I thought this might be due to usage so I left my phone alone for a few hours with half charge and it was almost dead when I checked back. Anyone else having this problem or have any ideas?

I thought I would give my upgrade a few days... I have noticed my battery indicator does seem to move a little faster than it used to. I really don't see a "significant" increase... but none the less... it does appear to use more juice with 2.0

This will be a pain when I am on the road.. because the iPhone battery life never has been the greatest.

Check your settings to see if you have Push enabled. Also, do you use an Exchange server? Both of these might affect battery.

After turning push off, my battery life improved.

However, yesterday as I got my phone out of my pocket I noticed that it was quite warm. The screen was off and I got the home screen on unlocking. The battery had lost 25% (since a charge within that hour). So something was running and using power. I had to reset the phone and all was fine after that.

Immediately after the 2.0 update I did what probably everyone else in the world with a prev gen iPhone did... I surfed for apps and bought a few. One was MonkeyBall... and oh wow am I bad at it...

Anyway my phone discharged very fast after all that. The apps I got where:

Band
eBay mobile
Jott
Mobile news network
MPG
PCalc
Source forge network news
Super monkey ball
Tyro tuner
WeatherBug
YPMobile

Of course I played with all of these and my phone went down to 50% in several hours with no calls. I had enabled push as well since I have a .Mac account.

Another thing I noticed was some pausing doing things. Another forum entry said to reset the phone. I did that and the pauses mostly went away AND the phone got cooler after a few minutes.

This leads me to believe there is something running when it shouldn't be. I don't think it's push as I have done very few if any calendar/contact updates and my email is done on IMAP.

I wish there was an application that did a "Top" command. Someone needs to create one of those so we can figure out what is running when our phones get warm.

It seems to me that the answer until there is a fix, is if you use a few apps. Reset your phone if it appears to be getting warm.

I have an original iPhone (8 GB), and I updated to 2.0 on Thursday, 7/10. The battery life was pretty dismal, so I got rid of all the apps, etc., and my "push/fetch" was off. Whereas before the update, I used to go for days without having to recharge, the iPhone with 2.0 wasn't lasting a full day with minimal usage.

I read the discussion boards here. Someone mentioned that it might be "Location Services." Since I have an original iPhone (i.e., no GPS) and don't have a real need for location services provided by cell tower triangulation, I turned it off.

*It worked like a charm! Battery life is back to normal.*

I"m not entirely certain what Location Services are or what they do on the 1st gen iPhone, so perhaps some of you need them; however, I use POP e-mail, Web browsing, EDGE, WiFi, SMS, and the phone without Location Services -- with no apparent problems.

Same here. The "location services" may be that feature that tells you where all your friends with iPhones are and you where they are if you have GPS as in the 3G iPhone.

I turned off that, push, and all other "wonderful new features" which might keep the CPU or RF active and my battery usage with 2.0 is as it was before 2.0.

Well I turned off "Location Services" for the day and it did seem to improve the battery life. I also found out that if you hit maps it automatically turns on "Location Services" so you have to go back into settings and turn it off. Overall I do not like 2.0 and hope an update is coming soon to fix all of the problems.

I had the same problem after the 2.0 upgrade (4 1/2 hours use until it died). I ended up exchanging my iPhone at the Apple Store for a new one with 1.1.4 on it. Since I obviously can't restore it from a backup now, I started off as new. I have charged it twice now and my battery life seems just as bad as it was in 2.0 (maybe even worse as I have just 2 1/2 hours use and maybe 25% battery left!). I discovered what may be the culprit as my Yahoo email account was set to PUSH "on" by default. I have now turned it "off" and will see if this helps out (besides, the Yahoo PUSH has never worked anyway).

I like some of the 2.0 update features but I couldn't live with the slow jerky typing and unresponsive interface. That was a deal breaker for me. If that had been my first encounter with an iPhone I would have returned it and never bought another. This update is NOT very good PR for Apple and I would hope they RUSH to fix it before anything else.

Same battery issue here. I turned off the 'push' email feature but that did not help too much. Today I turned off 'Location Services' and it does seem to help - so far at least. Anyone know what this does on a 1st gen phone anyway? I do notice certain apps ask if they can use 'Location Services' and if you say yes they turn it on and leave it on. My fear if is an app does not ask you will not know it has been turned on.

Last night - with just the 'push' feature off - I went to bed with a fully charged phone and woke up with a 60% charged phone. With the old software I could do this and still have a 90% or so charge. I cannot even make it through the day on a charge and I only make 1 or 2 calls a day. I used to be able to charge it every other day.

I have a theory. In 1.4, I swear that when my iPhone went to fetch email, that the EDGE symbol first appeared (from nothing being displayed there), and then the WiFi symbol appeared if I was within range of my WiFi. However, now in 2.0 it seems that the Wifi is ALWAYS connected if I'm within range.

Could this be part of the fast battery drain problem? I can't remember for sure, but didn't the WiFi disconnect after a period in 1.4?
