Unauthorized Charges To My Itunes Account, Lack Luster Customer Service

On Monday three unauthorized charges were made to my Visa Check card via the Itunes Store totaling $500. I am fairly certain my account security was breached through a link in the discussions boards, but that is another matter.

Contacting the Itunes Store (via email as they have no phone support) resulted in some serious disappointment. They refused to assist me in any way.
After spending thousands of dollars on Apple products I am offended by the level of support I received. Apple has access the the greatest technology available and should have been able to see easily that those charges were not made by me....

I guess I'm just venting but has anyone had this experience? Was it resolved in the end??

It is so easy to blast Apple with this kind of thing. It is also alarmist. If there really were an issue with Apple accounting itself doing these things you know that Apple would be on top of it in a hurry. There are several ways to file a claim: dispute your transactions with the credit card company or bank as nonperformance of service or fraudulent activity, and boycott Apple if you so desire. Other ideas come to mind but ranting on a discussion board about how you were fraudulently ripped off of hundreds of dollars and blaming it on Apple is not the mature way to go about solving a problem. You are free to talk all you want, but accusing Apple of doing something and not backing it up with a valid reason is not being responsible.

I back up my experience by saying that I was a victim of identity theft two years ago. It was annoying to say the least, and unexpected since it involved my bank account and not my credit cards. I did not A) Rant and rave about and to the vendors and B) Remained rational and provided as much information needed to the bank and credit bureaus. It was all resolved in the end. Note that the vendors did not refund me, it was my bank.

I understand the anxiety involved in unauthorized transactions. But this thread is not necessary. I am not defending Apple and I do not work for them. All I am saying is that you should contact your provider of payment, not the point of sale. Identity theft or unauthorized access is a problem, certainly, but think before you type.

I'm not going to blame Apple here, just want to share what happened to me today. Today I was checking my bank account (online) and noticed that I had an -$987.00 overdraft in my account, I went into the account looking for more details of what happened and there where 12 PayPal (iTunes) unauthorized transactions totaling $2000.00!! And that's alarming. I instantly called my bank online fraud center to notify this incident and they automatically canceled my credit card and my account. Suffice to say, today is Sunday, and I have no money, no credit/debit card and will (must) have to spent tomorrow in the bank solving this issue.

I haven't made any of those transactions. In fact the only transactions I already made in the iTunes store (through my iPhone) are no more than 5 and for no more than $4.99. My bank account has been complete depleted and right now I'm in -$987.00. How can this happened?

What I'm trying to say here, if you look at all the complains, something really bad is happening in terms of security here in Apple, and that must be addressed ASAP.

Peace,
~!v@n

some of these problems I know were where someone's info got stolen while they were doing online buying so doesn't apply to this (unless they have wireless internet), but if people are buying things wirelessly with their iphone or other things, it's very possible that their info was sniped by someone who has set up shop near a wifi hotspot that doesn't have good encryption or someone has figured out already how to get around middling wireless encryption. I've read that medium security is already cracked and with all the info flying around some people with more greed than brains is going to spend a lot of time to figure out how to steal from all this wireless activity. paypal transactions don't involve credit card info, so seems like the best way to purchase through itunes or wirelessly if you can.
I was at a ny thruway rest stop tonight sending some pictures through their hotspot, and they have no encryption at all. basically anyone using that service is risking a lot if they wanted to send info over the airwaves.
just because it is really convenient, don't assume that it is safe. I hope also that all of you that get scammed can recover your money!

Same type thing is currently happening to my wife. Apparently someone got her cc#, and IS CURRENTLY MAKING SEVERAL $200.00/purchase ($800.00 in charges so far!) Finally able to get BofA to cancel the card, but thats another story.

Can Apple trace the computer/account these fraudulent charges are made to, to help find out who is using the CC and provide info to help prosecute the thieves?
