All contacts disappeared from IPhone

Turned on IPhone and all my contacts are gone; On a commercial flight in airplane mode and without doing anything out of the ordinary, selected contacts and found all were missing. In hotel, tried syncing with laptop and my contacts will not sync to iPhone. Calender information is there, however no mail. It's gone too.

Any Suggestions on getting them back and what happened in the first place???

Thanks for any input.

This sounds very promising, but unfortunately I am in a different country from the desktop computers with which I set up our three iPhones. They are all on a family account of mine, and one other phone is sharing the contact list. My own phone has the contact list back in place now, but my wife's phone, which shares my contacts, is blank. My son's phone now has his own list back.

I have a laptop with me and am accessing my MobileMe from that, but if I reset from this, will it reset my wife's contacts?

The situation is also complicated by the fact that, being roaming, I have 3G and data services disabled for serious cost reasons.

It is a serious issue to lose all one's contacts when abroad, and I am very unhappy with the performace of our three new phones.

Also something odd is happening when trying to manually save a contact in the phone. It does not seem to be saving these at all.

I'm having same problem.

Recent calls and texts show up as numbers and if I go into address book on iphone it shows names but has no other information with the contacts (numbers and addresses etc). this has been since 7am this morning (now 4:30pm).

I'm using a new 3G iphone and syncing with mobileme on my laptop and desktop machine (which have remained unaffected).

Please apple - solve this riddle QUICK

Okay, I found a solution.

First, unlike others, this did NOT resolve itself by just waiting.

On the iPhone, go to Settings and then "Mail, Contacts, Calendars:. Select your MobileMe account. Then turn "Contacts" to off... and wait until you no longer see any entries in contacts... including names. It will be totally blank. The "Contacts" button should remain off. See below for what to do if it goes back on its own to "on."

Now, turn "Contacts" back on and wait. It will reload the contacts.

Let me note the following. When I tried this away from home when I was NOT on a WiFi network (in my case I was on Edge as I have the original phone), the "Contacts" button just went back to "on" -- that is after saying it was removing the contacts and waiting a while it just went back to on, even though the contacts were gone. So there was no way to turn it back to on.

But once at home on my WiFi, it worked as expected and was left in the "off" state from where I could turn it back on, which then worked.

My theory is that on the slow Edge network that I had near my work, it could not properly complete the action and maybe timed out. Once on a fast network, it worked. This is just a theory.

At no time did I need to physically resync with my desktop computer or do a complete reset of my iPhone.

Hope this helps.

Where is Apple on this? I use iPhone for business and when I'm missing thousands of contacts, it hampers my ability to do business. Offering one free month of mobile me isn't enough because now its actually been out for almost 1 month.

Although turning syncing off and then back on may work, it is not a fool proof solution. As mentioned earlier, the only way to guarantee that your contacts stay on your phone is NOT to use Mobile Me to sync your contacts. The old way is still the best.

The other side to this is that when the phone syncing goes down, there are also phone numbers missing from me.com/contacts. I will go to certain contacts (and it usually seems like the same ones) and all of their information will be missing. Everything will still be accurate in Address Book.

All of this points to a complete breakdown in Mobile Me and how it processes this information. Apple should be embarrassed that they let a product that is performing at a sub-beta level out into the marketplace.

UGH!!!

Apple claims to have fixed these issues with Mobile Me but they're still there.

Example, in my address book, I have a contact with an email address and a phone number. I go to mobile me and there is a name but now information. The result of this is that if I use "Push", the information that is missing from me.com is also then going to be missing from my phone.

Everyday, the effected contacts are different. Sometimes, when going to the website, I'll see if the information has magically appeared and sometimes it does... When I do a check of the rest of the effected contacts, I find that many of them still are missing information.

I'm not sure why sync isn't working... It used to work just fine...

Very frustrated with Apple right now.

I concur!!!!!!!!!! My iPhone was working fine until I upgraded to 2.0 and lost ALL of my contacts. At the end of sync, the contacts were gone. The Apple support website mentioned that they would be stored in the CLOUD at MobileMe, but I had not signed up to MobileMe-which I had to do just to check if they were there, which they were not!!!

I have tired every support technique mentioned on the Support page-but no luck.

My husband has a first generation phone with less GB and no problems at all. I synched and updated to 2.0 for him a day earlier and no problem.

I had numbers stored in contacts that I no longer have access to and I am in tears. Any suggestions 😟

The fact that this KEEPS happening REPEATEDLY is as astonishing as it is frustrating!

My contacts names show in my address book, however there are no numbers. When I receive calls, text, etc. all I see are numbers now with no contact names. I have rebooted, turned off and turned back on and it worked for a few days but now it is back to square one. Tried to do it again, no luck. The complete entries are in the cloud when I check online.

I can not function or conduct business with the madness!!!

Interesting that Jephtha is having similar problem. Yesterday morning, I updated a contact on the iPhone (deleted a duplicate entry). Next thing the entire contact list of 3500 entries disappeared! I was on my own WiFi which is very slow here. I powered down the iPhone and restarted it. No contacts. Yet about 15 minutes later the entire list re-appeared.

While it is nice to be assured that the data is still preserved somewhere, I am in a different country to my synchronised desktop computer and managing on a laptop and the iPhone, and it is very frustrating to have this unreliable situation persisting.

I still have not seen any explanation from Apple as to why these problems are occurring, and how they are solving them.
