I have a windows me computer and have just bought an ipod which is now on its way. I have now heard that I will not be able to download itunes! Is this true? If so, what can I do?

Return the iPod, or get a PC that iTunes is supported on.
Is that my only option? There is no other programme?
Your stuck in the same boat as all of us, lame, I know. Hope that apple fixes the problem they've created...period.
And have they said they will? What do other people do if they dont have XP or 2000 computers? There must be people who have ipods and dont have them.
I'm pretty sure people with macs are fine. It's only pc users, I think. So go buy a mac. That's what they want anyways, right? Lame.
Thats a joke! I mean come on Iv just bought an ipod off them now I have to buy all this aditional stuf to make it actually work!
I'm blown away by all of this. I can't believe the problem has not been handled already. A company as big as Apple should be on top of things like this. I feel your pain, orls, and so do the rest of us......
I can't believe you neglected to research system requirements before buying the iPod.
Apple couldn't buy a Win Me PC today even if they wanted to.

The requirements are clearly stated on the outside of the iPod box.
OK, to try to put some of these threads to rest:
1) Windows 98, 98SE, and ME are all dead products. You can no longer buy them.
2) Windows 9X (I'm going to include ME in this as well, because it's the same basis) is built on top of the old DOS. This limits it to 16-bit operation and 8 character filenames with 3 character extensions (this probably doesn't matter to you much, though).
3) Windows 2K/XP are built on what used to be called Windows NT. It's a much stabler base, supports a real level of security (patches aside; those are a different issue) and has a completely different architecture. Software written for 9X will run on 2K/XP, but only in a separate container that was designed for emulation. 2K/XP software CANNOT run on 9X. Ever.
4) iTunes first came out in the tail end of the ME timeframe. ME had already been announced as a dying product with no further updates, and was ending service at that point. Apple made a decision not to attack this dying operating system and coded for 2K/XP, where things are far more similar to the rest of the world (NT was built on a Unix-style framework, much like OSX is).
This being said, it is possible to use an iPod with 9X. There are a few products available. I believe both EphPod and Anapod work on 9X and will interface with an iPod. You will not be able to use the iTunes Music Store or the AAC format (unless someone gives you an AAC track, maybe). I don't work with either product personally, so I can't say anything about them, but you have options.
I'd strongly recommend considering upgrading to XP, though...It generally a better OS than 9X.

andrew, I think you missed the point.
The iPod/iTunes disk is for WinXP or Win2000 computers.
It will not install on WinME operating systems, which is what orls has on the PC.

Ok, so pretty much my only option is to upgrade. Well then, how exactly do I purchase winodws 2000 sofware and where can I get the best deal?
you need to upgrade to windows xp (not 2000)
it'll run you $99 to upgrade or $199 for full install version - you can get it anywhere that sells software/computers etc
