MacBook Pro can't see Airport network but three other macs in house can

Very strange. I can connect my three iMacs (G3, G5 PowerPC and G5 Intel) to my Airport Extreme Network, but my MacBook Pro can no longer see the Network, and Airport utility (from MacBook Pro) cannot see the Airport base station (although other macs' Airport Utility can no problem). My MacBook pro can see 4 other networks (my neighbours' networks). Doesn't seem to be a problem with my MacBook Pro airport card as I can connect to the (non-Mac) wireless network at work with no problem. Am really confused (not the first time)!

Installed the latest Airport Extreme firmware last week, which was the start of the problem, as I then lost the ability to connect to my Virgin Media Broadband digital TV box, necessitating Virgin engineer visiting at weekend to connect a cable modem to the cable tv box, to which the Airport Extreme station is now attached. Had problems connecting my MacBook Pro last night, but eventually managed it. All other macs connect seamlessly. Am stumped.

iMac Intel G5 2.4 Ghz 3Gb 1Tb, Mac OS X (10.5.4), Also MacBook Pro 1.8 Ghz 2Gb 80Gb + older iMacs

Have you tried deleting the wireless network name (SSID) from Preferred Networks in your Network configuration, and then re-entering it again?

Also, have you tried adding a new user account for testing purposes in case there is some file or setting behind your user account that is causing the problem?

Since you've tried various locations in the house, I don't think that changing the wireless channel will help.

Quick update. I must admit to being quite confused now. Last night before I went to bed, I turned off my modem (which I do every night). The LED on the AEBS was flashing amber, which is what I expected. I didn't turn it back on until probably a couple of hours ago. For kicks, I tried Airport Utility and much to my surprise, Utility could see my AEBS. I really didn't do anything so I can't really pass along any tips to help anyone out!!! I did exit Airport Utility and launched the app again and sure enough, there is my AEBS!! I haven't updated any software or made any changes since my last post so I really don't understand what went wrong. If anything changes, I will repost.

My Airport Extreme has worked flawlessly with my MBP forever; or at least until the most recent update.

I seriously doubt that this is a matter of country of manufacture, or channel, or location in the dwelling. I say this because I'm now typing this using IE in XP via BootCamp, because I can't print to my wireless printer from OS X. And, because the Aiport Utility in XP still sees the Airport,...because I have yet to run the latest Airport updates for Windows?

And, it isn't that OS X doesn't see the Airport. I have great wireless access. It's just the Utility that doesn't see the Airport.

Why??

Add me to the list of those puzzled by this behavior.
Old PowerBook G4 connects to, can see and configure Airport Express with no problem. PowerBook sees AE speakers in iTunes when connected as AirTunes.
Brand new MacBook Pro can connect to AE with no problem but cannot see it in Airport Utility or see it when connected via iTunes.
I believe same problem preventing iPhone from syncing via WiFi on Remote and 1Password from App Store.
iPhone sees MBP but MBP cannot see iPhone.
Naturally, PowerBook can see iPhone as Remote in iTunes.
Strange indeed.

My wireless problem related to this topic is that my 2 MacBook Pros will just drop local network connections at random, but happening at least 2 or 3 times daily. When this happens, they both maintain wireless access to the Internet but loose wireless visibility to any server or device on my local network (i.e. Network Printer, Mac G5 Wired Desktop, Time-Capsule).

Like others who have posted to this topic, it seemed to start happening after the 7.3.2 firmware update (which I didn't initiate, just updated on its own). Access to my Time-Capsule from my G5 desktop shows no problems, as it is wired directly into it. I also have no wireless connectivity problems during these outage periods from the 2 iPhones I own.

Current remedies for my wireless MacBook Pros have been:

* Select different broadcast channel (automatic does this but not sure if it's helping)
* Reset the Time-Capsule from the wired G5 Mac
* Power cycle the Time-Capsule
* Turning Airport off and then on again to reconnect to Time-Capsule home network

All of these measures work for a few hours and then network/bonjour services drop again for the wireless devices. Any help would surely be appreciated...

I had similar problems - network accessible but Airport Utility couldn't see the Extreme or the Express. The network disk was also unavailable. It turns out that the Apple firewall on my PowerBook was abnormally denying configd and mDNSResponder data from the basestations.

Look under System Preferences -> Security -> Firewall -> Advanced -> Open Log to see if yours is doing the same.

Turning off the firewall "fixes" the problem. Otherwise what worked for me was to reset the Power Management Unit, then to add /usr/sbin/mDNSResponder, /usr/sbin/configd, and /usr/sbin/nmbd to "Accept incoming services" in the firewall. (Beware - resetting the PMU will lose the date and time as well as the name and password of your wireless network)

Others have had mixed success with other techniques: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7396947
