No sound in .avi files in QuickTime among other players.

So, I'm having the same problem as everyone else with QuickTime 7.5

I never noticed that anything was wrong with my movies until the other day. I thought it was my camera and tried shooting another movie and importing it to my computer, but it still has no sound.

I have been searching this board and online *non-stop all day long* trying EVERYTHING, and everything that I have tried nothing has worked.

My camera takes video clips in .avi file format. I've tried QuickTime, RealPlayer, and iPhoto - none of them play with sound.

I had to make a music video for one of my college courses a while ago and my iMovie 08 wouldn't work with .avi files (I have no clue why because the older version of iMovie that the college had would work with .avi files) so I had to use a converter I found online to change them to a .mov file, well the converter would only convert so many seconds of my 30 second to 1 minute videos. Now those are the ONLY video clips that have sound and it's depressing because it's not even the full clip!

Can someone please, please help me its been such a devastating day finding out none of my movies have any sound anymore and I'm going to a concert in a month and I wanted to take some videos but now it's depressing that if I take them I can only listen to them on my camera. :-/

As for a list of things I have tried... I have....
Uninstalled and Reinstalled QuickTime 7.5 a couple of times - rebooting each time.
Installing older versions of QuickTime only to find out that it wouldn't let me for some reason.
Installing and uninstalling Perian multiple times.
Repaired all the permissions - rebooted
Checked the MIDI settings it states that my output is not supported.

I've done everything.

hey mynameiseno.

I just saw your post and realized that you did what I did already and to no avail. Although I did it, and it apparently worked.

Here's something that maybe can help. These are the list of codecs that I have installed in macintoshhd/library/quicktime.

ac3movieimport.component 1.76
appleintermediatecodec.component 1.2
applempeg2codec.component 1.0.1
divX decoder6.6 (THIS MAY BE ALSO ESSENTIAL since you have PERIAN and it still doesn't work)
diVX encoder 6.6 (THIS MAY BE ALSO ESSENTIAL since you have PERIAN and it still doesn't work)
flip4macwmvadvanced.component 2.2.0.49
flip4macwmvexport.component 2.2.0.49
flip4macwmcimport.component 2.2.0.49
perian.component 1.1
XviD 1.0 Pref App
XviD_Codec 1.0 Alpha.component

Hope it helps a bit.

I'm in the same boat with the no sound thing. I will admit I've only done the simple thing as downloading that Perian thing. I've read and read all of these posts and answers.
None of it makes sense to me. Codes or codecs? Where are they and where do I get them? Or apparently delete some. I just want my sound back without losing all of my videos. (Trust me I'll manage to do it).
And why isn't someone at QT reading all of this and helping us out?! =-(
Can anyone help? Help someone who isn't as savvy with computers!
Thanks.

Did it install (the Perian codec)? They're all codecs. Codecs are devices or programs that are capable of decoding or encoding data. You see the file programs, .avi, .mp4, etc, are all coded then this Codecs are installed in your video viewing program so that i can decode the data, in other words so that the program can play the program. In this case, the quicktime 7.5 can't play the .avi files so you would need the Perian program to play it.

Worked with me.

The codecs you can just look for in google by typing "perian", or "divx codec" etc.
But if you're really want a list, here's the apple quicktime components website...

So you have perian already and it's still not playing? is it turned on? Check network preferences and below the system tab, there should be "other", you should see Perian, its image should be look like a swiss knife. Click it. It should say there that Perian is installed, otherwise there should be a button that says install.

Here is the EASY thing to do-I don't get the codec thing either.
go to www.easywmv.com. Download the program for $15.It converts avi files into MP4 files, and then those work with all Apples' programs.
Apparently the new upgrades don't support avi-(an old Microsoft program!!)

The Easy WMV thing works. You do have to convert each file-but it's pretty quick.
