Mail randomly does not connect

Hello -

I am a new iPhone 3G user. When I first set up the phone, everything worked great including email. However, I have noticed that at least once a day, my mail will stop fetching to the phone...it will simply just not connect. This seems to happen at different times throughout the day. Turning the phone off and on will reset this, but I shouldn't have to do that every day!

I am starting to think that this is from turning 3g on then off (I turn it off to save battery and on to use data). Could this be the cause?

Any body else having an issue, please let me know! Thanks!

I'm having the same problem as I mentioned above but when mail does work and the phone is locked i.e, sleeping, it doesn't wake up and beep to download the email. However, when I wake it up (touch the home screen) it says connecting and then it downloads the email and beeps. It's a crazy situation b/c all day every 10 mins I'm waking it up to check to see if I've recieved a message and b/c of this my battery dies in 5 hours. Plus, half the time it gets stuck on 'connecting' and I need to reset the darn thing.

PLEASE Apple I would feel much better if you admitted there was a problem and said you were working on a solution. Does anyone from Apple monitor these forums?

I have the 3G and try to connect using a Comcast and GoDaddy POP account. I just purchased the phone a few weeks ago and have had this problem since day one. Apple just does not seem to want to admit that there is a problem, but at least I know I am not crazy or stupid in reading these threads. They obviously have an issue. I have spent more time trying to fix this then I care to think about... I am a Computer Engineer so I know a bit about firmware, software, networks and all that stuff.... just does not work well. I am real surprised that Apple responds this way... I do not have much experience with their products since I am a PC man... I guess Apple is just as bad, or even worst in this case. argh.

i am experiencing the same problem. email is pushed to my iphone, then without warning and for no apparent reason the pushing of emails stop. and by accident i discovered that by powering off/on, it fixes the problem. (actually, one morning my iphone just started to drop every call i made... if ppl called me or i called out, the connection would drop right when the call was established. nothing i did fixed the problem and i was going to try taking the iphone sim card to my old phone to make some calls, then i discovered that powering off the iphone fixed the problem...)

i have no idea what the real cause is, it could be a combination of things, like installation of apps, the way i use the apps, perhaps doing something in an order or combination that was not tested before, playing with settings, switching networks, etc., etc.

the ONLY thing i do know so far, and what this thread confirms, is that whenever the iphone is crapping out and working inappropriately, powering off/on the iphone is a good thing to try and if you're lucky the problem(s) will go away for a while before you have to power off/on again!

looks like iphone is taking a page out of windows. when stuff happens just reboot.

I have a 1st gen iPhone w/ all the current updates to iTunes and iPhone. I have been having this exact same problem for about the last week. I have this problem when on Edge and Wifi, it doesn't seem to matter. I have turned Push on and off and it makes no difference. Someone suggested hitting the home button while in mail, I've tried that too and it never helped the problem. The only thing that seems to help is powering down. I now have to do this 3 or 4 times a day. Very frustrating!!

APPLE, is anyone listening??? At least admit there's an issue and you're working on it, PLEASE!! I know a moderator saw this sight so someone's watching.

When this type of problem happens chronically, the temptation is to look for an explanation, and I am doing so as well. I connect to the outside at home through my Airport. At work I am either using Edge or connecting using my office's Public Access WiFi connection. The problem for me seems to happen when I connect to Public Access. I go to mail and the program will spin on "connecting" forever and never pull any mail. If I then shut it down and restart, it connects fine. When I go home it connects to the Airport fine. If I don't connect to the Airport, it connects the next day to Public Access fine. But if I do connect to my Airport, the next day it won't connect through Public Access anymore until I turn it off and reset it. So, I actually think it has something to do with a flaw in how the phone negotiates between different wireless routers, rather than being a problem with Mail per se.
