Optical audio stuck on, won't see internal speakers

Hi,

I just spent 20 minutes with an apple tech, no solution.

Our optical audio out is stuck on, so the speakers won't work. If I plug in a headset, I get output (from various sources, quicktime, Amadeus, Logic), but if I unplug it there is no audio. The audio controls bring up a volume icon that is maximum with a circle slash (meaning you can't change this). If I hold my finger over the headset jack I see a little red light.

We've tried discarding /Library/Caches/ and /Library/Preference/apple.com.audio.DeviceSettings.plist.

In system preferences/Audio the input choices are Internal Microphone, Line In, (Digi 002, Mackie Onyx), the ouput choices are Digital Out, (Digi 002, Mackie Onyx). If I disconnect the 002 and Onyx, the only output choice is Digital Out.

I tried to search discussions, but for some reason I can only search the entire apple site, which is useless (when searching "audio stuck on optical").

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

You mean the toslink? I don't even think we own one. There's nothing plugged into the jack. And it was working until about two months ago. (Also, we have 20+ of these machines in another lab with no unusual connections. Just speakers or headsets.) If we plug in headsets we get audio. Unplug them, no speakers, but after about a half second the laser light comes on.
