Can't play store bought DVDs

I recently had my Superdrive replaced by an official AppleCare center, due to some previous problems.
Now, I just can't play most (not all, just most) of my DVDs using DVD Player.
The playing process starts fine but after the initial Warning/Disclaimer and producer's logos, when it comes to getting to the dvd menu, I get this error messsage:
"the disc copy protection could not be verified -70025"
The same discs work fine on my old PowerBook G4, and can still be played on my MacBookPro using VLC, but that's not the best option, since DVD Player.app is a much better program.

I have OS X 10.4, and here's the system profiler data for my computer and new optical drive:

I am having the exact same issue. It happened after my logic board failed and they replaced the logic board. The DVD player will suddenly NOT play Region 1 DVDs even though it is set to Region 1. I will play Region 0 (or Region 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) DVDs just fine.

This is extremely annoying and no one at Apple Support seems to have a clue.

Can someone please help?!

Per Knowledge Base article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2397

"In Mac OS X, this dialog box appears the first time a DVD disc is inserted:

"Since this is the first use of a DVD disc, the drive region code must be initialized before playing.

_*"New Drive Setting: Region Code 1*_

"You can only change the drive region code 5 more times."

More informaition if you use your os Help menu for region codes. Keyword: dvd.
There is a section called Apple DVD Player: Last Region Change Must Use Single Region Disc which is interesting.
