Can't play store bought DVDs

I recently had my Superdrive replaced by an official AppleCare center, due to some previous problems.
Now, I just can't play most (not all, just most) of my DVDs using DVD Player.
The playing process starts fine but after the initial Warning/Disclaimer and producer's logos, when it comes to getting to the dvd menu, I get this error messsage:
"the disc copy protection could not be verified -70025"
The same discs work fine on my old PowerBook G4, and can still be played on my MacBookPro using VLC, but that's not the best option, since DVD Player.app is a much better program.

I have OS X 10.4, and here's the system profiler data for my computer and new optical drive:

Hmm, since this is a Superdrive issue, I looked around to see if others were having similar problems, and saw this old thread concerning a Macbook with the same DVD playback problems. Don't know if it'll work, but give it a try...

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=326112

The suggestion was to first repair the disk permissions, like so:

Utilities (found in Applications) --> Disk Utility
Click your hard drive partition and click "Repair Disk Permissions"

Then set the DVD region code to whatever is appropriate for your country. I'm not sure how you do that manually, but you normally get the option as soon as you pop in a commercial DVD.

Incidentally, have you tried using VLC player on DVDs from other regions? The reason I ask is because if your Superdrive currently allows you to play multi-regions with VLC and you set the DVD region code, you WON'T be able to play DVDs from other regions later with VLC (either in Mac OS X or Windows). It's a hardware restriction of the Matsushita drives designed to enforce region codes (and the current bane of my existence). Something to consider.

Well, VLC is of course a working and not the worst alternative but it's just not ok, that software which is delivered from apple as part of the operating system or at least bundled with them stops working for some dvds after an authorized change of the hardware player by apple itself. Also in my eyes it's not a matter of decrypting the disc because DVD Player and also Front Row complaints about the verification of the copy protection. Resetting PRAM and repairing disc permissions doesn't help. And setting the region code to a different one and then switching back is not possible so far as I don't have a dvd with a region code other than 2 and I found no way to change it otherwise. Also starting with a brand new account doesn't solve the problem. Maybe I should call Apple Support as my MacBook Pro is still protected through Apple Care.

I thought I'd add my voice to the list, I'm having the same problem after having my superdrive replaced because it wasn't burning DVDs anymore. The new one's been working fine for the couple of months I've had it but now DVD Player will not play store-bought DVDs. I keep getting:

"DVD player encountered a system error -70025"

It doesn't say anything about copy-protection. The DVD plays in VLC (but I hate using VLC because it's so unstable). Ive tried verifying/repairing permissions, setting the region code as 4 (I'm in Australia and the DVDs are region 4) and nothing works. What's going on?

Exactly. We have this same issue with an original Macbook that got its DVD drive changed (details below). Apple must address this in a software/firmware update (currently running 10.5.5).

One thing that's not been mentioned is that it actually is not possible to change/set the region code in any way. Efforts to do so in the local Apple repair failed, until we decided that I'll take the laptop home and let them push the issue internally to Apple in the U.S. Nothing they could do about it, anyways.

Hi Daniele,

I also have exactly the same problem : after DVD burning issues on my Macbook I've got the superdrive replaced (by myself ! i'm the manager of a french apple authorised service provider) and after the replacement burning works but not reading DVD with DVD player.

I have the same message the DVD player can't verify the disc protection -70025

The superdrive I have is not the same revision (4B0E) :

MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857 :

Modèle : MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857
Révision : 4B0E
Numéro de série :
Disque amovible : Non
Protocole : ATAPI

Type de socket : Interne
Scrutation de faible puissance : Oui

I think I will get it replaced again

Gilles, I don't think re-replacing the unit will help you.

It seems the replacement units used by Apple are somehow different from the original ones, and I see this issue only solvable by Apple engineers. Maybe a software fix will do.

Unless you happen to have an original Superdrive hanging somewhere (i.e. a Macbook that's broken in some other way than the drive). That might work.

Please, keep pushing Apple to see this is a problem. It is repeatable, documented. It's all in there hands, now.

Hi everyone,

just an update to this long running story. I got my Macbook Pro back from repair today and i am really disappointed. The SuperDrive was replaced for the second time but the error still remains. I haven't a clue what I should do now. Replacing the SuperDrive is obviously not the solution for this problem. My AppleCare Protection Plan will end on April 6th and the SuperDrive itself is under warranty for 90 days from now. By the way: The replaced unit is still a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857 (Firmware-Version: 4A0E).

I'd be curious to know whether Mac OS X is cacheing the DVD encryption keys from the old drive, resulting in this issue.

Try the following:

1) Make sure DVD Player is not running.
2) Try deleting the file:

~/Library/Application Support/DVD Player/Settings/Authorization Settings.enc

3) Try running DVD Player again.

If it still doesn't work, replace step 2 above with:

2) Delete all files in the directory:

~/Library/Application Support/DVD Player/Settings

and try again.

Don't forget to report back whether this works. 😀
