DHCp Renew lease not working, no IP address

My internet connection thru my modem stopped working yesterday. The modem is fine, went thru the whole rebooting process with them over the phone. When she told me to go to preferences, click on "built-in ethernet", she asked me what the IP address is and it's blank. I hit the renew DHCP lease button and the IP address remains blank. She gave me the MAC number but it said I have reached them during non-business hours but did not indicate when normal business hours are. I am using someone's wireless connection right now. Any suggestions?

Mac OS X (10.0.x), I think this is my OS, not sure though

Mac OS X's come in different versions.

As to your blank address, I would suspect the ethernet cable is defective, or is not in properly. First check the ethernet cable connection at both ends as well as your Cable 'cable", and if still no good, try another ethernet cable; by which I mean the one between the computer and the modem.

I tried to change out my ethernet cord and no luck. I clicked on the "assist me" and checked the diagnostics but it's telling me to check with my isp, which I've already done and there are no problems there. I've tried the "renwe" button several times but it still comes up blank. Does the "location" have anything to do with it? It's on "automatic".

Hi,

We still do not know what version of OSX you are running: 10.2/10.3 or another?

First: try and set your preferences on 'built-in ethernet'; with the new ethernet cable in both the 'cable Modem' and the 'Computer' power both OFF. Wait about 5 minutes......... Power the Cable Modem ON, let it get up to speed; now, start the computer. It should grab the IP when restarted like this. You can check in preferences under the 'Built-in Ethernet' selection to see if it did... You may have to re-run the 'assist...' to get it set in (and may not), depends on if any changes were made at the 'service end' (updates).

Let us know how this goes...

Location on "automatic" is fine. The "contact your ISP" is also a regular message that appears.
I have had the issue many of times. And what solved it was the earlier mentioned unlocking of administrator password and the "assist me " bit.

A longshot would be to open your keychain access in applications/utilites and just run a keychain first aid and "repair".
Also a good one is ot restart your modem from your firefox/safari browser, using address:
http://192.168.100.1/

with all keychains unlocked.

Good luck. it's only a quirk that - like i said - i had many of times and it WILL resolve by persistently maybe 3-4 times doing what I originally suggested.

A hard wired ethernet modem usually wants a restart, especially if connected to different machines.

Thank you for the suggestions but it's still a no go. I am on Version 10.4.11.

I tried to restart both the modem and computer (which the cable company suggested), ran the assistant a couple of times just in case and still nothing.

I went to the keychain access but when it ran, there were "no problems found". I tried the http suggested but it just says 'server unexpectedly dropped the connection...".

I noticed whenever I open Systems Preferences and Network, it automatically comes up as VPN (PPTP), I always have to manually change it to built in ethernet but can never use the "apply now" button as it is grayed out. I'm assuming because no IP address comes up?

Any other suggestions before I bring it in somewhere?

Hi again,

In the 'assist me', what method are you using for a connection? There are a few to pick from. If the right method is used the DCHP should be the one coming up in Network Preferences. Also, do you have a sign-on/password combo from the cable service? Does it work? Another thing, could you tell us what cable service you are trying to connect to? Most have their own methods and steps to follow. With mine, even with the sign-on/password it did not work UNTIL I called in the problem and THEY 'authorized' the connection (then the IP address came in). (Same with my daughters on a different provider). Seems the service providers have to do something on their end when they are talking to you to 'make the final connection'.

Your Tiger Network Preferences should be able to connect once the service provider ALLOWS it.

If you are on the ethernet, direct to the service modem, and have that method selected in the 'assist me', it should come up with an IP number... providing the service provider (and maybe the ID/Password is correct) has you as a legitimate user. Mine has changed the IP number many times, but they still have my ID/Password listed so I keep getting in. If something got changed on TimeWarners end and things got misplaced on their servers (or assigned to the wrong parties), it could explain it. I do know that as a result of the latest Trojan Horse all the servers where suppose to apply the fix... that could of messed up their servers if it did not go well.
It may pay to have your computer on line and ready, call them up (during business hours)(when then can look at your file as you are trying to connect) and see what is wrong.
When I did mine, the computer had to be connected solid with their modem thru ethernet, and my FireWall had to be OFF... once it had it, I could then run thru a hub, WiFi, or other means, but the main Hand-Shake had to be done solid. You, having already had their service should not need to do that again. But if they messed up the account info (somehow, on their end), if may have to be like it is a new service. As you seem to be doing the right things on your end... I think it is messed up on their end... and the after hours 'bit' sounds more like a delay then a fix.

hiya, sorry about the delay in getting back to you.
VPN mean "virtual private network"; have you tried to delete all
previous networks? A lot of the time, the issue (in my case) was a
"computer to computer" network, and once deleted, it worked.

I take it you tried your modem address again, which should be: http://192.168.100.1/ and any browser should take that.

Hope you get it sorted (perserverance will - I KNOW from my own
experience). 😉

Good luck 🙂
