Error Code: -3 and Error -1404

When I attempted to download the latest iTunes update, it appears as though iTunes installed fine, but there was an error with the included Quicktime. The error code is 3.

Then when trying to run iTunes, the message comes up that I need Quicktime version 7.0.3, and what I have is 7.0.2, so re-install.

After going around in that circle a few times, I download the standalone Quicktime installer, but that yields error 1404 and 1402.

Next, I uninstall iTunes, discard the relevant files in the iPod bin folder, and attempt to again install iTunes. Same error messages as originally.

I don't know how to proceed now. I have no access to iTunes or updating my iPod. These "upgrades" always seem to be a headache...

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi b
I tried the standalone quick time install and I got the following error messages
Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Computer, Inc. \Quick Time\Installed Files\Quick TimeUpdater.exe. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personel.

Error 1603 Fatal error during installation.

Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information.
I did disable norton before I did it.... Any ideas.

I don't have "QTInstallerLauncher.log" part of the first sstep of getting an installer log. See below...

1. Turning on some advanced logging by creating a new file in your "Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp" folder with the name "QTInstallerLauncher.log". You might have to turn on "show hidden files" to find this folder. (Right click "my computer", select open, select Tools menu -> Folder Options. Select View tab, "show hidden files" radio button is in the center scrolling panel.)

Any other other ideas?

Thanks,
Dan

below that, Dan, it says:

This might not be exactly the same problem but lots of people (myself included) had problems after installing iTunes 6.0. I did the following and it finally installed correctly.

I went to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301
and downloaded the Cleanup utility near the bottom of that page. When it installs on your machine it will scan your computer for every installer every ran on you're machine. Only select iTunes and Qtime and delete those 2 installers. Then I went to add/remove programs and removed iTunes and Qtime. Prior to this Qtime would not unistall but now it did. Funny thing was there was no prompting by windows once I hit "remove/repair" in the "add/remove programs" function.

Then rerun the iTunes 6.0.1 update. That had been failing to install Qtime prior to this but now it installed and I see all my music again and iTunes works. Let me know if this does the trick, I hope so.

How bout this. I edited my registry and managed to install an older version of iTunes, but I got crazy one day and tried to install the newer version 6. Needless to say it failed, and now whenever I run "regedit" a get a DOS window that opens open then closes after about 5 seconds. In other words, I can't access my registry editor anymore with the "run" command. Is there any other way to access the registry editor program?
