Error Code: -3 and Error -1404

When I attempted to download the latest iTunes update, it appears as though iTunes installed fine, but there was an error with the included Quicktime. The error code is 3.

Then when trying to run iTunes, the message comes up that I need Quicktime version 7.0.3, and what I have is 7.0.2, so re-install.

After going around in that circle a few times, I download the standalone Quicktime installer, but that yields error 1404 and 1402.

Next, I uninstall iTunes, discard the relevant files in the iPod bin folder, and attempt to again install iTunes. Same error messages as originally.

I don't know how to proceed now. I have no access to iTunes or updating my iPod. These "upgrades" always seem to be a headache...

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

hi Mario!

hmmm. i just did a Google on regedit.com. have you ever had Navidad or some other worm removed from your system? because i keep finding these instructions showing up at Symantec and McAfee:

This problem can be recovered by opening an MS-DOS prompt and going into the Windows directory and then copying REGEDIT.EXE as REGEDIT.COM. You can then run REGEDIT from the START menu and browse to the registry path to remove the invalid entry mentioned above.

b do
you have regedit showing up in your start menu? if so, can you launch it from there?

Hi b and everyone who is spending far too much time trying to install quick time.
Thanks for your help. I changed all the key access listed in adams post..... but I still got the error message 1406. but guess what when I clicked ignore it installed fine, and I have just watched my first movie trailer.
Should I put the registry back to how it was when I started or not. I saved a copy on the desktop as directed.
Thanks again.

🙂 glad to hear you're up and running again, Dan, but ...

I thought I would let you know that I ended up rolling my system and starting from scratch and now it works fine.

... good
b gracious.
are we talking a full windows reinstall here? (heroic measures indeed, but sometimes it seems to be the only thing that works with these weird variations on registry errors ...)

well done, Mario!

With some fiddling I was even able to install the new version of both iTunes and Quicktimes without any futher registry edits. Quite miraculous...

🙂 i'm prepared to settle for a miracle.

it seems like we went from everyone having no luck at all in this thread to success for everyone this afternoon ... perhaps we just had to wait for the heavens to align properly ...
