There have been a lot of negative threads about the low battery life for the 3g. I was wondering if a firmware update can actually fix this issue or is it an issue with the battery itself??? I currently own the original iPhone and I am happy with the battery life. The 3g battery issue is the only thing holding back from upgrading. If it is something a firmware upgrade can fix, great.

If it is an errant process that is causing the battery drain, then yes, a firmware upgrade can fix it.

I bought the 3G on the understanding that battery life would be BETTER than the 2G version. Did I miss-understand this?

God knows how you came to that conclusion. It was always going to be worse. IT'S 3G. Despite what Steve Jobs gave the battery life as. It's not as good as what Apple say. Who on earth told you that the 3G battery would be better than the 2G?
I use mine in 2G mode since I don't have 3G yet in my area. Under 2G mode, I get at least as good as the previous iPhone.

Guess I should believe what Mr Jobs says in future then!
Can a firmware update really fix a battery issue?
