Couple of Observations

I noticed when my phone is sleeping (screen off) and I hit the home button I have 5 bars of 3G coverage. As soon as I unlock it drops down to 2-3.

Also, There is clearly a problem switching between 3G and EDGE. My phone will show no service and as soon as I switch of 3G, i get 4-5 bars of edge. This happens in my office where there is no 3G coverage and I forget to switch off 3G.

Just to Chime in — I live in the geographic center of San Francisco...smack dab in the middle of all the nice dark areas on the coverage maps (Voice & 3G). In my backyard (forget about my house), and my entire street for that matter, I barely get Voice (60% dropped calls, extremely poor quality, can't hear what others are saying, they can't hear me), I don't EVER get 3G, and I only get Edge about 25% of the time (WiFi is fine). This is the case in numerous parts of the city. The usual list of "fixes" have had no positive result.

My office, which is in the middle of nowhere (San Fran) get's 4 bars, 3G, and Edge.

The same is true for my wife who purchased her phone at the same time.

While it seems that a good part of this responsibility rests on the shoulders of ATT, I feel that Apple is an equal partner here. The phone is great, and I'm going to bank on it working itself out — BUT, come on people!

I am really bumming out reading these posts ...... I love the phone and as I have mentioned I have switched from verizon to AT&T to enjoy the phone. I thought it was just my area that was causing the poor voice quality. All these reports from all over are at a minimum frightening. I am dependent on the phone especially for voice. I ask the question to anyone who wants to read it ... if the problems are this bad how badly do you want the phone that you are willing to put up with all this BS. For me I don't think the need to have the phone is that great. I have 10 more days to enjoy it and think that may be my end. I am hoping that icall comes to the app store prior to my deprature as that would be the only thing that would allow me to use the device at home ... as it is I cant use it at all in my house which is critical since I have jettisoned my land line.

you are right, it should.

my experience is, however, that it switches too late, or tries to switch when a call comes in (as if it suddenly realizes, oops, there's not enough signal). from what others have written, this experience seems widespread. this is why a lot of calls drop.

you might also wish to read the original thread on this (link in the first post of this thread).

So 3AC, you switched from Verizon to AT&T for the 3g iPhone? That is what I'm about to do, but I'm just very leary about switching because of all these problems I'm hearing about. I spoke to a AT&T rep last Friday about 3G and he said that AT&T is projecting that 3G will be available everywhere in the US that currently has service. I just don't want to make the switch from Verizon to AT&T for the 3G iPhone if I'm going to have a ton of problems, because not only my work life, but a good amount of my personal life depend on my phone working.

Anybody have any opinions as to what I should do in light of the problems with the service? I live in the Akron Cleveland area in Ohio and I just want to make sure I have all the information available to me so I can make a good decision and not regret it for the next 2 years.

I work in downtown Austin TX. I can get 2 bars of 3G service (-93 to 103), however connection to the 3G network is intermittent and I spend most of the day with 5 bars of Edge

Prod Week 30(July)
Factory (88)
SIM 71234O4022
My IMEI number was correct in the system, and the "update" was sent.

I was instructed that my poor reception was due to the fact I was indoors and that the 3G network doesn't penetrate well. I understand. It makes sense, until I think about the fact that my colleagues non iphones get 5 bars of 3g service.

Whatever, I am still happy with my purchase. I have never lost a call, but I don't get that many calls. :P

Thats right I switched from VZ to AT&T. The coverage from AT&T is not even in the same league as VZ ... while with Verizon for 2 1/2 years I probably dropped 5 calls. During the first two weeks with AT&T I have dropped about 10. As for coverage I use my phone for work and home and as I have, according to the map, full coverage at home and office (in and outside the building etc) I cannot get voice connection in the house... not even close maybe 1 bar at most. With my verizon phone I had clear call quality. As for the internet the only time I get real fast access is on the wifi. You pay more for Verizon service but if your using it for business and you can get away with CDMA then go with verizon (in my opinion).

The Iphone 3g is a SHAM! I get no service with the 3g ever and that is in Chicago. To get service I must turn 3g off and even then I still do not get it in my house or office where my SPRINT and NEXTEL phones got great service. NEXTEL! for christ sake. So the 3g service that we are all paying extra for, it seems that few of us even get to use, and when we do the battery goes dead so fast it doesn't matter. I will be going into apple today and they had better tell me something I want to hear because otherwise both phones I bought will be going back.

BE VERY WEARY BEFORE YOU BUY THIS PHONE!!

After having a continual dropped call episode, I made an appointment with the Genius Bar in Pasadena, Ca. over the weekend

Usually, when I return something at a store, it will not duplicate what I had
earlier experienced, but in this case, my phone would not even pick up a 3G signal at the Apple Store!

He replaced the phone and I went on my way. At home, where I barely got 1 bar on 3G (even though I am in their coverage area) - I now get two.

I went to my AT&T store and switched out my SIM card (I had a 3022) - now a 4022.

Not much difference. Today many calls have been dropping, but we are in the midst of a 5.4 earthquake and plenty of aftershocks...

I love the phone's features, I just want it to work.
