I live on the west side of Cleveland and have had a terrible experience. I was with Verizon and bought out my contract just for the Iphone 3G. I am now currently on my 3rd Iphone due to network issues. I am experiencing about a 40% dropped call rate. I have gone through every level of support with Apple including 3 trips to their store in Beachwood, OH to have the phones replaced and to have someone at the "Genius Bar" tell me that they have not had any problems with reception. I have gone through every level of support with ATT also to no avail.

I am taking the Iphone back to ATT tonight and heading back to Verizon where I never have had dropped call problems. The Blackberry Bold comes out soon or maybe I will wait for the BB Thunder. Hope this post finds you in time or you have better luck than I did.

I as well switched over from Verizon and I am regretting the decision. Above all I need to make calls with the phone and am continually getting the ominous "No Service" at my home where the AT&T map indicates that I have complete coverage. My only satisfaction is that I didn't have to buy out my contract. Think I'll go with the curve and hope they roll out the Thunder in the mean time. I just cant get my head around how anyones love for this one is so great that it would outweigh the ability to make a simple phone call.

Well I have to say I'm shocked to have this problem and even more shocked to see so many with it. I always check forums for problems such as these before a purchase, but I didn't in this case.

I got the 16GB phone this morning in Tampa, FL and have had intermittent 3G connectivity issues with voice the entire time. It fluctuates from 0 bars to 5 bars, but is rarely stable for very long. I'm pretty much stuck using EDGE till this is sorted out (which is get 4-5 bars almost all the time inside or out).

I have contemplated returning it due to this, but considering I waited in line for it and have been wanting one since they came out to upgrade my original iPhone, I might as well see if it can get fixed with a firmware update.

Is there any sense in calling Apple or ATT at this point considering how seemingly well this is documented here?

Signed - bummed out...

Our Nokia E61 / T-Mobile 3G usually shows 5 bars at home & yet launch2net (via which we tether to the Mac) quite often shows a different story ... indeed, these last few days launch2net has been showing the signal to be weak - despite 5 bars on the Nokia - & we've had quite a lot of trouble tethering (needed multiple attempts, over maybe half an hour, to succeed) ... no idea what's going-on, really, of course ... just know it's a pain !

Still no proper SIMs from O2, so still no chance to try the iPhones ...

Apple called so I went to pick up my replacement phone. They wouldn't say what was wrong with my phone other then it had hardware issues. I walked out of the apple store and right away I had 4 bars of 3g which I never saw that in front of the Apple store. Made a few calls but the real test is, will it switch networks without dropping the calls? I'll report on this later. I think there is a silent recall going on.

I just got off the phone with AT&T tech support. He sent me the update, re-registered the phone, etc. Not much help, but it's hard to tell because I'm inside a building. I'm going to see what it looks like at my home. He admitted that this is a very wide-spread problem that lots of people are having - a refreshing change.

While I was on the phone with him, he started to open an incident for me, then put me on hold. When he came back he said that he had just received an email that the network engineers had enough examples of the problem now. Hopefully with "enough examples" the problem can be solved "soon." He didn't want to hazard a guess as to what "soon" means, but he said that AT&T is working with Apple to try and fix what's going on.

He offered to send me over to Apple support to have my phone swapped out. But I'm on my second phone already and there is absolutely nothing else wrong with this phone. My luck being what it is, I hate to swap it out for an unknown phone with possibly other problems like leaking light and a cracking case.

I can get 5 bars of 3G in some places. So I'm opting to hang with it for a few days and see if a fix comes through. I've had no problem with getting 5 bars on Edge most of the time, so worst case I just turn 3G off for now.

I'm in Charlestown (Boston), MA and have been having 3g trouble where I live. I switch off 3g and I still only get 1 bar in my apartment. If I walk out the door and down the street, I get one or two bars WITHOUT 3g.

If I walk a quarter of a mile down the main street, I get 4 bars 3g. This seemed to me to be a tower issue, but after two calls with AT&T and two re-registering attempts, the problem remains.

The thing that confuses and annoys me most is that I get good 3g in other parts of Boston. I was also in Pittsburgh over the weekend and had 5 ⚠ bars of 3g for almost the entire trip. In a Boston suburb, in a huge furniture store, in their IMAX theater... 4 bars 3g.

This issue is likely a joint problem between the network and the phone, but why does the phone work so well in other areas? Charlestown is less than a mile from DOWNTOWN Boston... Even in the suburbs of Connecticut I got a few bars of 3g.

Very irritating here. I hesitate to return the phone because I have seen its potential when on 3g. I know it's stupid not to return it, but I just can't deal with that hassle right now.
