Amen!

OK I did the same test on mine and found I get 1 bar or barely any 3G service and then turn off 3G to get 5 bars of edge in the same exact location. I'm in the NY/NJ area with blue 3G coverage under the AT&T map.

I would like to know when Apple or AT&T will address the issue formally and suggest what we consumers should do for the meantime until the issue is resolved and when we can expect a fix to the problem so many are suffering. I think for so many people to have spent so much time in line to buy a product that is not performing as everyone has been led to believe, we deserve some answers. I will not return my iphone, I love it, with or without 3g. I love it more when 3g is working, and that is one of the reasons I bought it, but even without 3g it is still a superior phone imho. What bother's me the most is the extra $10 AT&T is charging for something that is not functioning properly. If the fee were the same as the originally iphone, $20, I would not be so concerned for the time being, believing there must be a fix on the way. Is there? Hello, Apple, AT&T, are you listening? I know you are and I know you can hear us!

I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area, in Mountain View. Bought my 16GB iPhone 3G on July 22 in Palo Alto. I live and work smack dab in the middle of a big blue zone "3G" on the AT&T 3G map. Today an AT&T technical rep told me I was in an area with excellent coverage.

I'm about 400 meters from a 3G tower. If I get within about 100 meters of the tower, I get 4-5 bars of 3G coverage. If I move another 100 meters away, 3G coverage drops to 1 bar, or often drops off altogether, and reverts to 2G (EDGE). Doesn't matter if I'm inside a building or not, and I have tried from the middle of the street. Nearly everywhere in my city I'm at 1-2 bars, unless I'm within 100-150 meters of a tower.

Phone otherwise is working great. 2G (EDGE) is working great, consistently 4-5 bars.

Hi... I don't think it's the iPhone problem. The more people joining in the 3G network makes the 3G coverage shrinks down. For example, if 1 tower covers up to 15 miles in radius & only 1 user using the network it's fine, but if 1000 users in the network (especially most people using 3G for data connection)... the coverage can be shrunk to 2 miles radius.

I have to leave 3g turned off all the time on my iPhone 3g to prevent dropped phone calls. The iPhone doesn't seem to transition/downgrade from 3g to edge. I had a AT&T Tilt (3g) before this phone and it worked perfectly in the same coverage area between 3g & edge. So I am very concerned as an Apple shareholder that this is a hardware/chip related issue which could be devastating for Apple. Please Apple, find a way to fix this with a software patch or we are all going to lose a lot of money.

I am having the same issue with my phone. One second I will have four bars sitting at my desk then poof no bars and my phone disconnects. Sometimes the 3G will be connected with a full signal and then seconds later no more 3G. I would understand this if it wasn't a full signal and I was driving down the road but this is all sitting at my desk at work.

I WANT TO REPEAT THIS AGAIN, so more people can hear it:

Some people (with technical background) here in the forum tend to come up with this elaborate explanation as to how the transition/hand-off between 3G and EDGE should be seamless.

(And my input was about iPhone exclusively. And they still insisted on the technical explanation that it was not the iPhone.)

But in actuality and posts after posts, reviews after reviews, again and again, THIS ISN'T TRUE!!!

Add me 3G in Chicago is terrible. I live by Wrigley. I have the phone locked in 2g because I can't receive a 3g call in my house....2g works like a champ.

@ my office in the Lyric Opera building....I can't make a call with 3g....2g is not much better...so I'll chalk that up to the building....but in front of the building....I can't make a 3g call...only 2g.

Today I was out driving down 88 from Iowa...all 2g...phone worked like a champ...got into 3g area...calls dropping like mad....3 in 10 minutes....locked the phone to 2g....no problems.....looks like be bought ourselves a no usable 3g phone.

Doug,

If it's a chipset issue, it's possible it's updatable via firmware. However, that's all speculation right now. And honestly, until Apple or AT&T says anything, it's anyones guess. If I were a betting man, I'd put it on AT&T's network. I'm in Cincinnati, and getting a good cell signal here is not a trivial feat - much less high speed.

The only reception issue I've had has been when the phone enters one of the dead zones on the west side of town. Sometimes it only acquires edge upon getting signal back - though lately that has improved.
