Apple TV 2.1 won't show in my iTunes Devices List

Hi all,

After updating with the 2.1 software this afternoon, my Apple TV no longer shows up in the Devices list in iTunes.

I've tried everything listed in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1453, but still no joy.

My current setup is:
Mac OS X 10.5.4 (Build 9E17)
iTunes 7.7 (43)
Apple TV 2.1 (Build 227, 8N5519 - EFI 00DA.B00 - IR 2.4.4 - GF 3.1.0/2.9.50)
Apple Time Capsule (Version 7.3.2)

Everything works fine - the Apple TV shows in the devices list, and syncs as expected - when I'm using the 2.0 software, which leads me to believe that there is a problem with the 2.1 software in my setup.

Does anyone know of any solutions or workarounds, other than the obvious of doing another Factory Restore and reverting to the 2.0 software?

Best regards,
Anthony

I am having the same issues with Itunes 7.7.1 (11) and Apple TV 2.1. No connection since updating to 2.1. Eventually did a factory restore on the Apple TV and it works again.

You mention working with Version 2.0 Is it possible to revert back to the Version software someway or do I either have the option of sticking with the very old default version 1.0 or updating to the apparently "buggy" 2.1 version

Hope you can help and at least let me restore to where I was on Version 2.0

cheers
Alistair

I don't know if this will apply to everyone. But in my router settings, I disabled "AP Isolation." Once I didn't this, ATV showed up in my device list. I currently use Linksys WRT600N and you should find this setting in "Advanced Wireless Settings". I worked on this for 2 days and it was a pain! Glad it was a simple solution.

I'm having the same issues as you all again. For a long time with ATV 2.0, my 3 Apple TV's would drop off the Devices list. Then, a few months ago or so, everything just started working perfect, no problems. Then, a couple days ago, randomly, all 3 dropped off iTunes again. Two are wired, one is wireless - so I know it's not a wireless problem. I've tried restoring to factory defaults, rebooting everything (iMac, AEBS router, ATV's) - nothing works. My firewall on the iMac is totally open. The wireless one and 1 wired one will sometimes connect long enough to sync immediately following a reboot of everything, but one wired one just won't. I tried removing all 3 from iTunes > Preferences > AppleTV. No luck. I can get the one that won't connect at all to finally show up in Devices this way, but it just gives the "port 3639" error and won't sync at all. The other 2 will only show up after a full reboot of everything. It only seems to have started having problems again after the 7.7.1 iTunes or 2.1 ATV update. Each ATV can play trailers and podcasts, so they are connected to the network OK.

I don't know why this is a constant source of trouble for Apple. I love their products, but this has been an issue since Day 1 of the 2.0 software and I just don't understand why they won't fix it. So frustrating. I'm almost to the point of selling all 3 and getting something different. And that means a lot coming from a fanboy like me. If anyone's got any fixes or knows someone at Apple that can help address this one and for all, let me know.

More details in my archived post on this issue:

EDIT: OK, so I took one of the wired ATV's and changed it to wireless. Now it's syncing. Don't know for how long it will last, but it does. There's got to be something messed up with the IP drivers. Hmm. in the middle of syncing, the ATV just randomly put up what looks like a dialog box that says "Apple TV is syncing with Tunes" (never seen that before), and then goes to the Apple logo - but I guess didn't reboot since it's back at the menu and syncing again. Or so it says. Wait - same thing - dialog box thing and then Apple logo for maybe 5-7 seconds. Back to the menu and syncing. Seems like a loop of some sort. Will try rebooting the ATV. OK rebooted. It's in Devices. Claims to be syncing again. Dialog box on ATV again. Now it's actually copying data over. Let's see how long that lasts for... Yeah, so, it copied over 25 pictures, then I got the dreaded "port 3639" error again. Wonderful. And it can still go out to the net and play trailers and podcasts, so I know it's connect to the network OK.

VERY FRUSTRATING. FIX THIS APPLE.

Oh, and the iPhone remote can connect perfectly to it. Why won't iTunes? Grrrrrr.

And... when I reboot my router, one of the 2 wired ones shows up long enough to sync. Here's it's Bonjour Browser entry... VERY different. (Of course it only stays connect for about 1 minute and drops off the list again, but at least it's something. Sort of.)

This is still infuriating me.

I've done some further testing, and my work laptop (vista business) running an old iTunes version 7.3.2.6 can see the Apple TV fine.

I'm upgrading it to 7.7.1 and if it can still see it, I can only point the finger at an issue caused by a recent update to OSX or a problem specifically with iTunes 7.7.1 on the Mac.

I actually went so far as to totally wipe my hard drive and re-install Leopard from scratch today. The first thing after installing a fresh install of Leopard was update using Software Update to 10.5.4 and have it also install iTunes 7.7.1. I then reset all my ATV's and router. And - still doesn't work. Which tells me that there's nothing wrong with my iMac - there's some bug between iTunes 7.7.1 and AppleTV 2.01.

FIX THIS APPLE.

I doubt anyone else is in this same situation, but I'll post this just in case. I was having the same problem- ATV not showing up in iTunes devices. I tried everything I could find here and elsewhere and nothing would work. What I finally figured out was this: I had a wireless router in my living room the ATV (and my Dish NW box) was connected to. This router is connected to a wall-plug ethernet adapter which, in turn, is connected to another wireless router in my office. My ATV had a internet connection but, again, would not show up in iTunes. Once I disconnected the wireless router in my living room and did a direct-connect to the box, the ATV showed up in iTunes. That fixed that problem, but left me without somewhere to connect my Dish box. Hopefully it will accept a wired router.

Hope that helps someone!

I hate to post anything prematurely, but it appears that after my total re-install of Leopard 10.5.4, all 3 AppleTV's have in fact started to work. The didn't at first, but they do now. All three are syncing and staying in iTunes. I hope I didn't jinx myself by posting this now! I hate that the solution was to lose a day by re-installing the OS and factory resetting the AEBS & AppleTV's. I wish Apple would just fix the issue.

Aug 8, 2008 10:49 AM in response to aBitGone

I have been experiencing this issue since some time in May of this year (1008).

I have an original Intel iMac (CoreDuo) at 2Ghz with 2GB ram and a 250GB internal HDD. This machine holds my iTunes library and syncs with my iPod and iPhone and backs up to one of my 1TB TimeCapsules.

I have a 160GB AppleTV with the latest update (I believe 2.1). I leave it on 24/7.

Ever couple weeks either rebooting my iMac or rebooting the AppleTV resolves the disconnect between the two devices... but it's not always consistent on which one is the solution.

I'm not certain what happens here. Perhaps one or the other stops polling for a bit and a disconnect occurs?

My AppleTV is connected via a cable to my Airport Extreme base station (802.11n). The iMac is connected via a cable to the base station (since I get better transfer speeds of the cable than over wireless (since the router throttles back to G speeds), but the iMac ultimately also has wireless connectivity turned on.

I also have a Mac mini (G4), a Blueberry iMac G3, a Snow iMac G3, a Windows PC and an Ubuntu (Linux) box all on the same network.

Covering my bases... I do not have MAC filtering turned on on the base station (but hope to use it soon after I move into a new apartment), but I [am] using DHCP at the moment to divvy out IPs. The base station is using WPA2 Personal transmission encryption and has a pretty strong password consisting of letter, numbers, uppercase and lowercase characters as well as special characters.

---

My end user expectation is that the two devices would remain connected unless one of them is off.

Apple TV 2.1 won't show in my iTunes Devices List
