Apple TV 2.1 won't show in my iTunes Devices List

Hi all,

After updating with the 2.1 software this afternoon, my Apple TV no longer shows up in the Devices list in iTunes.

I've tried everything listed in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1453, but still no joy.

My current setup is:
Mac OS X 10.5.4 (Build 9E17)
iTunes 7.7 (43)
Apple TV 2.1 (Build 227, 8N5519 - EFI 00DA.B00 - IR 2.4.4 - GF 3.1.0/2.9.50)
Apple Time Capsule (Version 7.3.2)

Everything works fine - the Apple TV shows in the devices list, and syncs as expected - when I'm using the 2.0 software, which leads me to believe that there is a problem with the 2.1 software in my setup.

Does anyone know of any solutions or workarounds, other than the obvious of doing another Factory Restore and reverting to the 2.0 software?

Best regards,
Anthony

JJP, I have been successful in getting my ATV to reappear, often by restarting iTunes (7.7.1). I've powered off the ATV, Apple Extreme and MacPro, as suggested, then restarted. However, the speed of the connection is still much slower than it was before the Security update 2008-005 and iTunes 7.7.1. In the Airport Utility, under the Advanced tab, you can see the 'rate' of connection with any WiFi device. The ATV may on rare occasions reach 130, which is a pretty steady rate obtained by my MacBookPro, located the same distance from the Extreme. However, the ATV rate always degrades down to ~13 and sometimes drops out of the connection altogether. Then I have to reconnect, enter the password on the ATV etc. Apple has really messed something up.
As I may have mentioned, I can see a neighbors unprotected linksys router which I can connect to and get 5 solid bars on the ATV. It remains connected and doesn't drop out from that router so it sounds like a problem with the Extreme or Time Capsule routers.

Hi all,

I still can't get my Apple TV to connect to my iTunes.

I'm not willing to try wiping Leopard off my MBP and try re-installing it, since if I try connecting to my Windows XP iTunes Library, I still can't connect there either

I've tried using a different Airport - went so far as to get my old Airport Express from my parents and tried that: no joy; bought a new Airport Express and tried that: no joy.

I've changed the ADSL router which is my DHCP server, no joy. Switched back to my normal ADSL router, no joy. Tried connecting via ethernet again. No joy. Again.

My only remaining thing to try will be to take my MBP and Apple TV to an Apple Store and ask them what the problem is.

It's really, really, really frustrating to have this wonderful device sat in my living room, and for it to be practically useless.

Is anyone from Apple reading this?

Regards,
Anthony

I can't see how it's Leopard - reason being, I've tried several different versions of the OS on my current and previous MBP, and I've also tried iTunes on my Windows XP laptop and also Windows XP running in VMWare Fusion.

With iTunes running in Windows XP via VMWare Fusion, it can see the Apple TV when using the 2.0 software, but not when using the 2.1 software.

David, Thanks. The rate ATV and MacPro rate is listed as 54mbps. I too have tried restarting all devices and software, but with no luck. I have been able to see the ATV on my other mac, which is a G5 Power PC with OS 10.4.11 and iTunes 7.7(43). Not only can I see it but also upload all photos, music, movies etc to it. I have also followed every step on the troubleshooting guide..to no avail. I keep looking at Software Update in the hope that a fix will be posted. Any other thoughts?

Hi, I finally got ATV recognised by doing two things:

1. I found the following website http://www.trick77.com/2008/03/16/apple-tv-not-being-recognized-in-itunes/ where a number of options were provided, including refreshing the Bonjour Scan by opening the Utilities - Activity Monitor and Quitting the mDNSresponder service. It automatically restarts.

2. Then I connected ethernet cable between the Airport Extreme and the ATV and restarted the device and iTunes. ATV came up in the devices list and once configured started syncing with iTunes.

I am not sure if one or both rectified the problem but I had previously tried to connect via the ethernet cable without luck.

Greetings! I'm having troubles with my ATV as well, mostly since updating to sec. update 2008-005. There are two, probably related problems. One the ATV drops off the network or doesn't appear in the iTunes list. Second, the file exchange rate has slowed tremendously, when connected via WiFi.

What is it you are looking at to see the messages? I ran the Screen Sharing App and I see the ATV listed in the Bonjour section but I don't know where to look for the messages you are seeing.

When I connect via ethernet cable, I can transfer files at a higher rate. Just means phsically disconnecting from the TV, moving to another room, etc. Hate to have to do this when everything was working great before the two updates.

Did you update to Sec. Update 2008-005?

TIA!
David

Here is a possible solution that seems to be working for me. At least the ATV has remained on the iTunes list AND the connection speed is back to where it used to be, streaming is again smooth and not jerky.

Using Airport Utility, I changed the setting for Wireless from one that was both n/b/g compatible, to n-only at 5GHz. Why that would solve it, I have no idea. So far so good. The ATV shows 5 bars of signal strength and the Airport Utility shows a rate of 210, compared with 10 after the 7.7.1 and 2008-005 updates, but before I made this change!
