Say it isn't so..
Just a heads up for anybody with an app in the store that saves any kind of data to its documents directory. My first update was posted to the store today, and I have had a few users report that their data is lost after an update. I know that this does not always happen, as I was able to update the app on my personal phone (using the App Store app on the phone) without losing data, but at least one user followed the exact same process and did lose their data.

You got a rejection notice because you warned people about the updater bug!?

Are we allowed to ask our users to backup before updating?
Tell your users it is always a good idea to backup before updating software in some generic way, but do not refer to the 'alleged' Apple updater bug that anyone reading any blogs about the iphone have been aware of since mid July. Apple will claim you discovered the bug as a developer even if you've never seen the bug yourself and you are basing your warning solely on customer complaints on in AppStore comments or blogs of about your app and the dozens of other apps experiencing similar data loss issues performing an update.
Yikes yikes yikes.
That's disturbing news about being rejected.
I'm glad I read this post because we've had a small percentage of our users report the same thing. I was just about to update our release notes to include a warning to backup before upgrading.
I wonder what would happen if one edited the metadata after acceptance to include that warning?

I've had no reports of data loss from any user updating my app once they have updated to phone OS 2.1. I just released a new version of my app, so we'll see if this holds.
Has anyone else had reports of data loss from users already on phone OS 2.1?

I submitted my first update since 2.1 last weekend. Hopefully it'll go live soon. I'll let everyone know how it goes... fingers crossed. It definitely seems like there are changes to the app update process on the device.
