5th Gen iPod making a clicking sound

When I connect my 5th Gen iPod Video, it starts to make a clicking sound like a computer would when the hard drive is going out or bad. Is this also true with the ipods? I can't get it to sync or even recognize for that matter. I've done a restore and thats pretty much when the problem started. Now it won't do jack. Should I start looking into buying a new one or is there some life left in this ol girl. Thanks for any advice.

Logic Pro,
I have had this problem about a few months ago, it started happening right after I opened my iPod ( and didn`t close it back together properly ). I have a hunch, that if the back case & the aluminum frame are not connected to the boards GND or - they cause the iPod to function this way. At your own risk, you can try to open it up. The only thing I have seen coming directly from the clickwheel assembly, is a small ribbon, that has an exposed portion of metal, that is pressed to the frame, in the middle-left side of the iPod. See if that`s properly connected, also, you might want to clean it up ( especially the back part ) CAREFULLY ( there might be fine dust/fibres preventing everything from making a good connection ).
!PS!: Be careful ... take extra time in disconnecting every single connector when pooping up back.
Good Luck, Darie

same here, sad that they die in a year, i guess we can predict what we are investing into now other mps players are worse, they break down more but depending on the user he or she would still save more money then buying a iPod.

The battery does not seem to charge on this iPod, when i disconnect it from the USB port i notice nothing happens., dead as a door nail.

Finally, TIME FOR A NANO!

My wife has a older nano with those headphones that it hangs from apple makes.

i tell you, using a iPod video 30GB with a radio headset was nothing but problems, unless you want to drag around a semi hard drive a iPhone 3G with 80GB is the best bet., for me a nano with that head set is what i really needed all along, with a 2.5 HD.

thought to share that with you.

I'm having the same problem. A while back my dad cracked my iPod 5th gen video open to repair the broken screen. Shortly after he repaired it, my baby conked out. I get it into disk mode to restore it on iTunes 8 (which is the current and most recent update, and I've reinstalled more than once,) but I keep getting a message that says, "iPOd 'iPod' cannot be restored. Error code (1429)" or somthing along those lines. It's so frustruating, but I think there's a good probability that it's something internal that got shifted a little when my iPod was fixed, and is now corrupting it. If anyone else has had the same problem and has fixed it, please, PLEASE let me know. Thanks. Ashley.
