i connected my ipod to my computer, and nothing appeared in my itunes or hard drive to prove that the ipod had been connected. after waiting about 2 minutes, i disconnected the ipod. however now it is stuck on the "do not disconnect" screen and no button combination works. i can't get it to do anything, it is frozen...

My best advice is to Reset: hold down the Menu (top) and Select (center) buttons for about 6 to 10 seconds and look for the Apple logo to come up. And you may have to try this multiple times. Just last week my iPod locked up and I tried to Reset it about 8 or 10 times without success. I gave up and left it sitting for a few minutes and tried the Reset again and it worked. Been working fine ever since.
I have occasionally experienced the same issue when I have connected an iPod to my computer if the iPod's screen was showing a paused song. If I first back all the way out to the main menu, this never happens. Only when it's showing a paused song when I connect it does it lock up like you described.
I have been trying to download from itunes for quite sometime. I get stuck in the do not dis-connect mode quite often when using my ipod 5th generation. several times it has wiped out some of my music and recently a audiobook. I tried turning it off and on and repeated this more times than I want to mention. I don't even see the apple logo anymore, instead I constantly see the color wheel spinning
I would like to know what can be done, I hardly have any more albums on my ipod, I need it to be up and running.
When you try to connect your iPod to the computer is the battery fully charged (Green) or is it red. I have been having a similar problem with my 5th Generation iPod. Often times when I sync my iPod with the computer and the battery is low (Red), the computer does not recognize the device and the iPod screen just displays the "do not disconnect" screen, and remains stuck on that screen often times freezing up iTunes aswell. Now oddly enough, when my iPod is charged (Battery level is green) this problem never happens. Maybe it is mere coincidence but who know. Charge your iPod up fully and then try to re-connect it to your computer and see if it syncs.
This has happened to me several times; once after disconnecting my iPod from the computer, once in the middle of a song on an airplane (the iPod was not connected to anything), and once after plugging in to a laptop without iTunes on it. Perhaps it's just an internal fault that occurs from time to time.
Thank you - you solved my problem. I held the Menu and center button for 15 seconds and the ipod FINALLY turned off. Thanks again to Apple Discussion groups.
