You do not state your model of G4. But, the following is a list of RAM specifications:

G4 AGP Graphics Sawtooth and Gigabit Ethernet:
-PC133 CL3 3-2-2/PC100 CL2 2-2-2 SDRAM 168 Pin DIMM.

G4 Digital Audio and Quicksilver:
-PC133 CL3 3-2-2/PC100 CL2 2-2-2 SDRAM 168 Pin DIMM.

G4 Mirror Drive Door (MDD):
-PC2700 DDR 333MHz CL2.5 184 Pin DIMM or PC3200 DDR 400MHz CL3.0 184 Pin DIMM Module

All memory should be low density, and guaranteed compatible with Mac computers.

Does anyone know why in the G4 MDD the supported ram is only 2GB using 4 512s? Do the 1GB dimms not fit? Too fat/tall/whatever?

You can use two 1GB DIMMs, or any combination up to 2GB. That's all the memory controller supports.

Because it is 32-bit hardware.

For all that you can realistically achieve commercially on a G4 now-a-days, 2GB is more than twice what you will ever need.

So what is the best way to go, 2 1GB sticks or 4 512s?

I use two 1GB dimms myself. You can get them pretty cheap these days. Try www.mac-pro.com. The G4 MDD machines are the only of its kind that can make use of true 1GB dimms, while other G4's before that model can only use 512MB chips.

actually, its 16 bit hardware where half is also 32.

Hmm.. will MS OFFICE ever require 2GB to function?

2 1GB dimms is the BEST way to go.

I don't even remember the last time I used M$ Office. I'm more concerned with running PS, Illi, and FCS2 at the same time.

Programs of which I don't even know anything about. Humor me a little. What do these programs do, and what use would they be to me?

I have a Ibook G4, 1.33 with built-in 256mb ram, but I have added a ram block of 512 mb. However, since I have installed new 10.5.4 operating system and 2008 mac office things has slowed down, and I have considered to buy some more ram.

1) What is the max ram that my ibook can handle?

2) There is only one slot? So adding 2 gb ram would be ok (make total 2256 mb)?!
